"Occupational Therapy" and the Future of Care woven with 3D Printing and Design (Onsite)

The ICT Rehabilitation Research Association believes that the widespread use of 3D printers will make it easier for various people to "make tools that improve the lives of individuals with disabilities." We operate "COCRE HUB," a platform for creating self-help tools with 3D printers, and hold a "3D Printed Self-Help Tool Design Contest." At this event, we will exhibit works by people with disabilities, including excellent works from the 3D Printed Self-Help Tool Design Contest. We will also introduce the stories of the works of the winners of the "3D Printed Self-Help Tool Design Contest 2024," and introduce the daily activities of "Occupational Therapists" who make self-help tools and other items with 3D printers all over Japan. We would like to talk with visitors about new perspectives on "occupation and design."

What is Occupational Therapy?
Occupational therapy is an activity that aims to contribute to human health by improving the degree of accomplishment and satisfaction of a series of activities (occupations) that are important to each individual. One of the origins of occupational therapy is the Arts and Crafts movement, and it is a field that is very closely related to the design movement. The ICT Rehabilitation Research Group has many members who are occupational therapists, who are professionals in this field, and they work with designers and people with disabilities to "make things" using 3D printers and other tools.

About the 3D Printed Self-help Device Design Contest
Self-help tools are tools that allow you to do things you can't do and make things you can do easier. Using such tools can make our lives more enjoyable and enriching. On the other hand, 3D printers are excellent creation tools that are individual, reproducible, inheritable, and design-oriented. By using a 3D printer to create self-help tools, the tools can be shared as data. This will benefit not only the people who made them and the people who use them, but also many other people. Through this contest, we aim to create a culture in which the wonderful ideas of the applicants are not limited to individuals, but are spread and further developed by many people. Based on this philosophy, this contest is calling for self-help tool designs that utilize 3D printing. For excellent works that pass the first round of judging, the 3D model files will be shared on COCRE HUB (https://cocrehub.com/), a web platform for producing self-help tools with 3D printers, so that people who need them can make and use them.
