"Drawing landscapes with pixel art"

APO+, who creates landscapes using pixel art, will explain what it means to draw landscape pixel art.
In this lecture, rather than focusing on detailed techniques and practice, I will be talking about landscape pixel art on a broader scale, starting with the way of thinking and mindset when drawing landscape pixel art, the fun of landscape pixel art, and its place in the world of illustration.
This lecture aims to provide participants with tips that will serve as a stepping stone for creating and appreciating illustrations in the future, not just in pixel art.

APO+ (Pixel Artist)
While producing high-resolution pixel art, mainly landscapes, he is also involved in a wide range of activities, including organizing pixel art events and writing and supervising books.

■ What is the pixel art school "The Pixel School"?
CONCEPT
This is a "new style of learning space" provided by thePIXEL Inc., which has the vision of "enriching the world, the times, and ourselves through empowering artists," together with the Shibuya Asobiba Production Committee, a general incorporated association.
This learning environment will be located in "404 Not Found," a vacant lot for indie creators, on the fourth floor of Shibuya Sakura Stage, which is scheduled to open in July 2024.
This is a new style of learning environment that combines "play" and "learning," where you can learn about "pixel art," which developed at the heart of Japanese game culture and is still loved around the world, from the perspectives of games, art, and technology (Web3).
We will invite lecturers active around the world and through a 10-session curriculum, we hope to become a place where participants can explore the significance and possibilities of working as creators, learn practically how creators can discover social and cultural value, and incubate these ideas.

OVERVIEW

■Comment from Motokuni Sakaguchi, CEO of thePIXEL Inc.
We have been running the Shibuya Pixel Art art festival for about eight years since 2017. During this time, we have met many pixel artists, and pixel art has become so familiar that not a day goes by without seeing their works on the streets. Recently, many pixel artists have been participating in projects such as games, music videos, and NFTs, and are actively trying to implement their own expressions in society. We hope that the Pixel Art School will foster the professionalism of these creators and, through encounters with mentors and peers, become an opportunity for them to blossom as creators. We hope that Shibuya will be the birthplace of creators who will be active around the world.

■Comment from Mr. Ishikawa, Representative Director of the Shibuya Asobiba Production Committee
Children naturally gather in vacant lots, improvise new games with friends they don't even know the names of, and get enthusiastic about them. Then, when dusk comes, they make vague promises without exchanging contact information, and head home. The small enthusiasm born in the vacant lot creates new relationships in other places, spreading in a chain reaction. We were once here, but as we grow older, we gradually move away from "play" and forget the enthusiasm.

What if this new "vacant lot" at Shibuya's landmark reminded people of the strange and precious relationships they had back then? And what if countless small enthusiasms were born from that? 404 Not Found is a place where enthusiasm and admiration accumulate. We hope that the passion of each individual who gathers there and the urge to create something will be embodied in the actual "place" on the 4th floor of Shibuya Sakura Stage and supported by professional "people" who have been active in various fields, creating new value and leading to business creation.

■What is 404 Not Found?
This is a creative hub for indie creators that will open in July on the 4th floor of Shibuya Sakura Stage. Aiming to be a mecca for indie creators active in various cultural fields such as games, art, music, and food, the facility will support creators' creative activities and create opportunities for co-creation among creators by hosting a variety of events such as exhibition events, workshops, live music, and pop-up restaurants. The approximately 150 m2 floor will feature an event space with an LED display over 10 meters wide, a merchandise and cafe space, a kitchen and restaurant space, and a distribution studio, allowing creators to engage in creative activities regardless of genre.

■What is Shibuya Pixel Art?
Shibuya Pixel Art is a pixel art art festival that has been held annually since the late 1990s in Shibuya, known as Bit Valley. It is an attempt to highlight the artistic value of pixel art (also known as dot art) and explore its appeal and potential throughout the city of Shibuya. From the beginning, the festival has adopted the philosophy of "using the city as a stage, everyone can play a leading role, and we will continue to experiment," and aims to develop and popularize pixel art while engaging with the public by installing works that have won contests and works by invited artists in the city.
