Fishing nets that are dumped in the ocean are a global problem. They are washed up on the coasts of Japan. Fishing nets and ropes account for about 30% of marine plastic waste (Ministry of the Environment survey/2016). Fishing nets are particularly difficult to decompose, and are said to continue to drift in the ocean for over 600 years. Kim Song-he will use the discarded fishing nets to create a chandelier, which will be exhibited at Chatan Park for one week only. The fishing nets used in this work were collected by fishermen in Numazu. The stuffed animals and toys used in the work will be made from items collected mainly by third graders at Jinnan Elementary School in Shibuya Ward. The giant chandelier, which appears by connecting the discarded fishing nets, will float before our eyes like a reborn treasure ship, and will ask us what we really need for our future. Please look forward to Kim Song-he's new work.
