■ Speaker Profile
Mehervan Sethi "Merv"
Merv was born and raised in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, and is known as the embodiment of a "third culture kid." He is currently based in Tokyo, where he has lived for over 11 years. He is the founder of Okayama Denim, a passion project that has grown into a leading online retailer in the niche market of selvedge denim and luxury apparel.
OkayamaDenim.com was one of the first online stores to adopt the Shopify platform when it launched in 2011, becoming the 3,300th store to use Shopify's services. Under Merv's leadership, the business has experienced steady growth every year, and continues to stay relevant by adapting its product offerings to evolve as the market evolves.
Merv's grandfather immigrated from India to Amagasaki, Japan in 1952, and he is inspired by his grandfather's experience to spread Japanese denim culture to the world. In particular, after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, he launched the "Okayama Denim Project," which produced and sold bracelets made from denim fabric and donated the proceeds to the Japanese Red Cross. The success of this project led to a deeper connection with the "Jeans Street" in Kojima, Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, which led to the establishment of the online store "Okayama Denim."
Today, Okayama Denim provides Japanese denim products to customers around the world and continues to spread the appeal of high-quality denim.
Jacob Iyamu
Born and raised in Germany, Jacob Ijam has had a deep fascination with Japanese culture since he was a child. His passion led him to found Solaris Japan in 2008. It started as an online store specializing in authentic Japanese anime figures and other collectibles. Jacob's entrepreneurial journey began in high school. While selling Japanese products online, he saw great potential in the market for anime figures and collectibles, and moved to Japan to expand his business. Under his leadership, Solaris Japan has grown into a brand beloved by fans around the world, with a wide selection of products, careful packaging, and human customer support as its strengths. As the number of customers increased with the success of Solaris Japan, Jacob sought solutions to provide better service.
