The "Showa 100th Anniversary Packaging Exhibition," an exhibition that reinterprets Showa design culture from a modern perspective, will be held at the "8/CUBE" gallery on the 8th floor Shibuya Hikarie from December 23rd to 30th. The exhibition is organized by the Japan Package Design Association (JPDA), a public interest incorporated association.

The exhibition was planned to mark the 100th anniversary of the Showa era if it had continued in the present day. It is comprised of two parts: an archive exhibition that looks back on the history of Japanese packaging design, which flourished alongside Japan's rapid economic growth, and an exhibition of works by contemporary designers.

The theme is "What if the Showa era continued as planned, as imagined by a professional designer?"

Entries were solicited in advance under the theme "Express your idea of Showa through packaging," and current designers created their own "other Showa." The lineup included works with unique ideas, such as early Showa-era-style packaging incorporating digital elements, retro designs that are conscious of gender and diversity, and "modern remakes" of products that disappeared during the Showa era. Packaging is a mirror that reflects the culture of the era. Along with a evokeing nostalgia, it also provides an opportunity to think about the next 100 years.

Additionally, as a related event, a "Showa 100th Anniversary Packaging Exhibition Commemorative Lecture" will be held on December 26th at the Shibuya Hikarie 8th floor event space "8/COURT." In-house designers from companies that have been in business for over 100 years, such as Ajinomoto, Kao, and Meiji, will take the stage to discuss product design and corporate culture that has changed with the times.
