Considering the future of urban life

Focusing on "disassembly" and considering the future of urban life

In 2007, it was reported that the urban population of the world had exceeded 50%. This was the first time since the United Nations began conducting demographic surveys, and it has been predicted that by 2050, the urban population will exceed 70%.

However, in recent years, as environmental problems such as the climate change crisis and the heat island effect become more frequent and worse, the traditional nature, values, and structure of urban systems are being called into question. How should cities, where the majority of the world's population lives, be updated in the future? As a hint, we will use "decomposition" as a starting point and think "mmm!?" together with you.

What is missing from the "urban lifestyle"?

Production, consumption, decomposition. Something is not produced, consumed, and then finished; it is then involved in the production process again through "decomposition." Originally, all materials have circulated in this way.

The cycle of "production, consumption, and decomposition" was also incorporated into urban life. However, by overlapping with a period of economic growth centered on industry, cities can be said to have supported the development of mass production and mass consumption. As cities have grown with a value standard of an "urban lifestyle" focused on production and consumption, it seems that "decomposition" has been separated from urban life, and its value has been suppressed. With the spotlight on biodiversity and natural capital in recent years, it is important to once again consider the "urban system of the future" and "urban lifestyle" (Loftwork Inc., Public Relations)
