Thinking about urban and remote island communities: Imagining the future of the region through adult island study abroad

An event to consider the future of the region

Hello! This is the Dozen Hometown Charm Foundation and the Adult Island Study Abroad Management Office.
On Sunday, September 8th, we will be holding an event to consider the future of the region from the perspective of "urban and remote island communities"!

In recent years, young people and urban companies have been paying attention to local areas as a stage for taking on new challenges.
In fact, Ama Town, an isolated island in Shimane Prefecture with a population of 2,300, is visited by about 100 young people a year under a trial migration program called "Island Study Abroad for Adults." Furthermore, companies from urban areas are expanding into Ama Town one after another, and are working with the local community to create new value in the local and Japanese society.

Currently, Otona no Shima Ryugaku is working on a "Welfare x Town Development Project" that combines "welfare" and "town development" to create services rooted in the local community that involve island students. Two active island students who are participating in the project and working hard to build a community in Ama Town will be invited as guests to this event. Professor Sakakura, who specializes in community management at the Faculty of Urban Life at Tokyo City University, will also be speaking as a special guest.

We hope to use this opportunity to compare remote island communities with urban communities and think about the future of each. We look forward to your participation!

~Background to participation~
I've always been interested in remote islands, and I thought I'd like to live there someday! Also, from my previous experience, I wanted to work in an environment where I could see the faces of the local people, and that's when I learned about this island study abroad program. I decided to participate because I wanted to cherish the excitement I had and the desire to "try it."

🔳What is an island study abroad/island experience for adults?

The Adult Island Study Abroad Program is a "work-based trial migration program" for people in their 20s on three islands in the Oki-Dozen region of Shimane Prefecture. It offers young people from all over the country the opportunity to live and work on the island for three months to a year, and to stay and work on the island as an island resident. Over the past three years, about 300 young working adults and university students have participated.
