We are pleased to announce that our popular "Kintsugi Experience Workshop" will be held in January.

The Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi Urushi Shop's "Kintsugi Coffret", available at LOST AND TOKYO STORE, is a kit that even beginners can easily get started with, containing all the authentic materials needed for "Kintsugi", such as natural lacquer and pure gold powder.
Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi-ten is a manufacturer of lacquer materials founded in 1909. In addition to the appeal of traditional lacquer, we are promoting new values and possibilities for lacquer.
This workshop will invite a lecturer from Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi-ten to teach the process of "kintsugi."

On the day, at the beginning of the workshop, you will be given an explanation about lacquer and the general process of completing gold lacquer, and then you will experience "gluing" and "rusting," which are considered to be the most difficult initial steps.
We will also provide tips and tricks for the process and answer any questions you may have.

The dishes used in the experience will be ones that were chipped and were scheduled to be discarded at Nikko's factory in Hakusan City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and you will be able to experience the texture of bone china.
You can also bring your own tableware from home.

After the "gluing" and "rusting" processes, you can take the item home and complete them yourself.

If you purchase the "Kintsugi Coffret", an experience kit that allows you to do Kintsugi at home on the day, you can follow the attached video explanation to smoothly go through the subsequent process.
(We will offer a 10% discount off the regular price as a workshop participant benefit.)

The participants' comments were:
"I wanted to learn authentic lacquer 'kintsugi'."
"I was interested but couldn't take the first step."
"I'm happy to learn what's in the kit and how to use it."
"I felt at ease being able to ask the instructor questions as I worked."

We have also received comments like this.

Tsutsumi Asakichi Lacquer Shop
Since its founding in 1909, the company has been purchasing lacquer sap from lacquer producers, refining, mixing and selling lacquer for a variety of purposes, including black and vermilion. The company is a lacquer raw materials manufacturer that provides lacquer to lacquer artists and craftsmen both in Japan and overseas, as well as to restore national treasures and important cultural properties, including Nikko Toshogu Shrine.
They hold the top share of Japanese lacquer trade. However, feeling a sense of crisis over the recent decline in demand for lacquer, they launched the lacquer promotion initiative "Urushi no Ippo" in 2016. They also launched "BEYOND TRADITION" to communicate new values and possibilities for lacquer, and use the environmentally friendly lacquered wooden surfboard as an icon to spread the word about "the value of lacquer that is kind to people and the earth". They also produce recyclable products such as wooden and lacquered straws/suw, which have garnered sympathy.
In April 2024, they will open "Und.", a new base that connects lacquer and crafts. With lacquer as the core, they will also develop various workshops related to food, clothing and shelter, as well as a lacquer art class called "Urushi School."

Received the 3rd Mitsui Golden Takumi Award and the 1st Japan Craft 21 Ronnie Award.
