We will be viewing the "Ukiyo-e Haunted House" at the Ota Memorial Museum of Art.
<Overview>
Ominous monsters that lurk in dilapidated mansions and ghosts that glare at you with terrifying expressions, hoping to get revenge. Various ghosts appear in ukiyo-e, sometimes frightening the viewer and sometimes making them laugh with their humorous appearances. This exhibition will feature around 170 ukiyo-e prints depicting monsters and ghosts (all works will be changed between the first and second halves of the exhibition), including masterpieces by Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. This summer, be sure to visit the Ota Memorial Museum of Art, which will be transformed into a haunted house (?).
Highlight 1: A large collection of ghost masterpieces by Kuniyoshi, Kunisada, and Yoshitoshi
This exhibition will feature a large collection of eerie and scary monsters and ghosts created by popular ukiyo-e artists such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi's masterpiece "The Old Palace of Soma," as well as Utagawa Kunisada and Tsukioka Yoshitoshi.
Highlight 2: A huge gathering of cute and humorous ghosts
There will be a large gathering of cute and humorous ghosts that are not just scary, such as happily dancing nekomata, kappa with almost human-like expressions, and mysterious monsters with strange forms like mascot characters.
Highlight 3: Approximately 20% of the works are new acquisitions
The Ota Memorial Museum of Art has often introduced ukiyo-e prints with themes of monsters and ghosts, but this exhibition includes 38 new works that have been acquired by the museum and will be on public display for the first time. Even if you have been to the museum before, we encourage you to come and see the new ghosts.
