"HOKUSAI: ANOTHER STORY in TOKYO" Exhibition Opens in Shibuya, Allowing Visitors to Experience Hokusai Katsushika's Masterpieces with All Five Senses

Due to popular demand, the exhibition will be extended until August 11th (Monday, public holiday).

The new immersive entertainment exhibition "HOKUSAI: ANOTHER STORY in TOKYO" opened at Tokyu Plaza Shibuya on February 1, 2025.

The exhibition explores the world of Katsushika Hokusai, an ukiyo-e artist who produced more than 30,000 works by the age of 90, from various angles, examining his multifaceted talent and the stories contained in his ukiyo-e. With the cooperation of the Agency for Cultural Affairs and Yamanashi Prefectural Museum, the exhibition attempts to recreate the world of Hokusai through an immersive experience that makes full use of video, sound, and touch.

With a focus on Katsushika Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, the Edo period scenery that Hokusai would have seen is recreated right before visitors' eyes using ultra-high definition video and innovative technology, allowing visitors to relive it. The floor is made up of seven zones based on themes such as "light," "wind," and "earth," and each zone expresses the multifaceted appeal of Hokusai.

In the "Light Room," ultra-high definition digital images using Ars Techne's patented technology are combined with a flickering light installation like a candle, bringing Hokusai's "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" to life in a new light. In the "Earth Room," Sony's tactile technology, "Floor-type Haptics," allows visitors to experience the sensation of actually walking at the foot of the beautiful Mount Fuji. Furthermore, in the "Wind Room," Sony's unique "Wind Haptics Technology" vividly depicts the invisible "wind" depicted by Hokusai. Take an aerial stroll through the world of Mount Fuji and feel the breath of Edo at that time.

The "Hokusai Room" is an immersive experience of Hokusai's world with all five senses. Sony's high-definition LED display and Als Techne's patented ultra-high-definition image data create a high-quality visual space. The bold yet precise composition, and the details and textures achieved through the outstanding skills of the engravers and printers, come to life before your eyes.

You can enjoy a completely new immersive experience that allows you to experience the fleeting world of Edo captured by Hokusai with all five senses and enter into his thoughts and perspective. It is sure to inspire not only Hokusai fans, but also those with an interest in art and technology.

The exhibition will run until August 11th.
