1st Medical Influencer Summit ~What is the "Parasocial Phenomenon"?~

Dissemination of medical information in the SNS era and its impact

Source: Peatix

As social media has taken root in our lives, the way medical and health information is shared has also changed dramatically. While the presence of influencers who spread medical information using platforms such as X (Twitter), YouTube, and TikTok is increasing, new issues have also emerged, such as unreliable information, slander, and even mental stress for the information spreaders themselves.

In recent years, a phenomenon called "parasocial" has been attracting particular attention. This refers to a situation in which followers feel strong empathy and affinity with the sender, but the discrepancy between their expectations can lead to slander or the sender themselves feeling excessive pressure. What should we keep in mind to continue sending messages without falling into the parasocial phenomenon?

The Medical Journalism Study Group has invited three people active on X (Twitter), YouTube, and TikTok to hold a panel discussion-style event called the "Medical Influencer Summit." This is a valuable opportunity to think about the dissemination of medical information and its impact in the SNS era together with leading influencers. We welcome participation from medical professionals, as well as those interested in disseminating information on SNS and those interested in improving the reliability of medical information.
