[Shibuya Wonderland] A peek at the "UESHIMA MUSEUM" packed with contemporary art!

We will introduce a wide range of new and attractive spots in Shibuya, from art to architecture and trends! This time, we visited a new museum that just opened in June, quietly located on a side street off Cat Street from Shibuya Station. What kind of experience awaits you at this museum? So, put on your backpack and let the adventure of Shibuya Wonderland begin!

If you go to the back of Shibuya Junior and Senior High School, down a side street off Cat Street from Shibuya Station, you will see the "Ueshima Museum" logo. With a bang!!

Mr. Mikio Ueshima, a graduate of Shibuya Educational Academy Makuhari High School and a businessman, is the owner and collector. "UESHIMAMUSEUM" has a theme of "contemporaneity". I was thinking about opening the door, but I was told that it was by reservation only, so I was asked my name, andLet's go in!

There are luggage lockers at the entrance, so you can be free from your heavy backpack (up to you) and focus on the artworks.

At the entrance on the first floor, a deer from Kohei Nawa's "PixCell" series reigns! It seems that there are small rooms on each floor, and you can enter them by scanning the QR code issued on the day!

The works on the first floor in the small room are a huge stone work by New York-based artist Mika Tajima and a sculpture by sculptor Kenjiro Okazaki. The third and fourth floors were closed that day, so I couldn't see them, so I took the elevator to the fifth floor.Let's go.

On the 5th floor, Matsumoto Yoko's large, and indeed enormous, abstract expressionist works are on display! Her Green series, her Monyari pink works, Wassaana abstract grey works and more are on display.

Don't miss the staircase corridor where Hiroshi Sugimoto's photographs are displayed on each floor, so you can walk from the 5th floor to the 2nd floor looking at his works.Go up the stairs!

The second floor has the theme of "Contemporary Expressions, Individual Worlds of Expression." Ryan Gander's dots are arranged in a way that makes them look like raindrops or drops of water falling according to an algorithm.SnapI was captivated by the moving artwork.

My favorite piece on this floor was a work by Ryoji Ikeda, located in a small room that you can only enter by mustering up your courage and opening the heavy black curtains. The work, which moves in a digitally processed order and irregularity on nine displays in a pitch black room, is immersive.Unbelievable!!

Olafur Eliasson's work also features an orange light space and an infinite figure of "me" appearing! You can feel assimilated with the work!

You can also see collaborative works by Theaster Gates, Chiharu Shiota, Takashi Murakami and the late Virgil Abloh up close!

The last floor, basement 1, has the theme of "Abstract and Inquiry into Expression," and features works by Bernard Frize from France, Leiko Ikemura from Germany, and the master of modern art Gerhard Richter. I ended up watching Annie Morris' "Stack" series over and over again. It reminded me of Planet Man from Kinnikuman.

Opening hours are from 11:00 to 17:00. Admission is 1,500 yen for adults, 1,000 yen for junior and senior high school students, and free for elementary school students and younger. Reservations are required, so be sure to make a reservation before you go!

It seems to be closed on Mondays and public holidays.

Shibuya's new art spot, "UESHIMA MUSEUM". Art lovers can enjoy it, but even beginners can enjoy it because there is a floor where you can see the works of masters up close and get immersed in them!
