Pink art descends on the Shibuya skyline -- "Mr. Pink" arrives in Japan for the first time

On February 8th, a giant pink art object called "Mr. Pink" appeared at the rooftop observation space "CROSSING VIEW & ROOFTOP LOUNGE MAG8" of "MAGNET by SHIBUYA109" overlooking Shibuya Scramble Crossing as one of the exhibit contents of "DIG SHIBUYA2025," a cultural event that combines technology and art.

A large advertisement for "DIG SHIBUYA 2025" will be displayed at Hachiko Square. Various events will be held in the streets and facilities of Shibuya over four days from February 8th to 11th.

"Mr. Pink" is a character created by Philippe Catherine, a French actor, director, singer, and artist. Many people may remember him performing a comical performance at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics last year, dressed as Dionysus, the god of fertility from Greek mythology, with his whole body painted blue. His versatility makes him a multi-creator and a true entertainer.

Mr. Pink appeared on the rooftop of Magnet by Shibuya 109. The pink color stands out against the blue sky.

The theme of the artwork is "Mignonism." It is a coined word that combines "mignon," meaning "cute" in French, with "ism," and expresses the desire to "bring a little laughter and fun to everyday life." Last year, an art walk was held in Montreal, Canada, where a dozen Mr. Pinks were set up throughout the city, attracting a lot of attention.

This exhibition, which is the first of its kind in Japan, was made possible with the cooperation of EXMURO, an arts group based in Quebec City, Canada. The approximately 3-meter-tall Mr. Pink is installed in a prime location overlooking the Scramble Crossing from the rooftop observation space.

When you go up to the rooftop, Mr. Pink greets you with his backside sticking out. Looking at the front, on the left side of his chest, you can see the scar from the heart surgery that Mr. Philip had as a child, which is one of Mr. Pink's distinctive features.

He holds onto the railing with both hands and peers down at Shibuya Scramble Crossing in a playful manner, which is adorable.

If you take a photo at the Crossing Photo booth installed at the top of the observation space, you can enjoy a dynamic commemorative photo with Mr. Pink and the view of Shibuya Station in the background, as shown in the photo above (photo fee: 1,000 yen per time).

Lounge space "ROOFTOP LOUNGE MAG8." From this space you can see the front of Mr. Pink, which is installed in the observation deck.

Limited-edition popcorn and drinks will be available during the event. In keeping with the pink theme, cherry blossom petals will be featured on the menu.

The venue also offers a special pink-themed menu, including popcorn sprinkled with freeze-dried cherry blossom petals (500 yen), soft drinks with cherry blossom petal jelly, and alcoholic beverages. The admission fee to the observation deck (1,800 yen) includes one drink, providing a special experience of enjoying the Shibuya scenery along with the art.

The exhibition will run until March 8. With the coming of spring in the air, why not go and see this pink giant that has descended into the Shibuya sky?
