The Shibuya Archive Photo Exhibition 2024, showcasing the Shibuya scenery of the Showa era, will be held at Shibuya Hikarie 8/COURT from November 16th to 24th.
The event is organized by Commons Archive Collective (CAC), which organizes photos and records buried in local communities and organizations and unearths their value. CAC has produced exhibitions and books on archive photos of Shibuya, including the Shibuya Koen-dori Photo Exhibition in 2021, the 1st Shibuya Archive Photo Exhibition in 2023, and the publication of the Shibuya 1962-1983 Archive Catalog as Seen by Dogenzaka Shopkeepers in 2024. The 1st Shibuya Archive Photo Exhibition, held last fall, attracted more than 2,500 visitors over the course of seven days, receiving a great response from people of all ages and foreign tourists.

This exhibition is comprised of 300 photographs taken in the 1960s to 1980s by Tadayasu Onishi, the third-generation owner of the Dogenzaka clothing store "Onishiya." Last year, the exhibition focused on Shibuya, but this year, 100 new photographs of Harajuku and Daikanyama have been added, along with a map showing their locations. Each photograph has a Google Street View link, allowing visitors to enjoy comparing the current scenery with that of the Showa era.
Born in March 1947 as the third generation owner of Onishiya, a clothing store in Dogenzaka. After entering Meiji University, he joined the camera club and began his photography career in earnest. As a central member of the All-Japan Student Photography Federation, he participated in photography activities on various social issues. In his later years, he mainly took photographs of Okinawa, which was shaken by the military base issue, and was active in holding photo exhibitions and independently publishing photo books. He passed away in May 2012.
Onishi had taken about 3,000 rolls of film, of which about 2,000 were taken in Shibuya and its surrounding areas. About 300 carefully selected photos from those were exhibited at the venue, showing the streetscape of Shibuya about half a century ago, including the area around Shibuya Station when the streetcars ran, the Tokyu Main Store under construction, the Harajuku Central Apartments (now Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Harajuku (Omokado)), and the Dojunkai Apartments (now Omotesando Hills).
