Introducing the trajectory of the scene with a focus on Banksy
2025-01-07
A large-scale exhibition gathering street art from Japan and abroad, "Street Art (R)Evolution" will be held at SHIBUYA STREAM Hall from January 22 to March 23. Approximately 100 works by 49 artists who have made their mark on the history of street art, including Banksy, will be on display.
Unraveling the history and evolution of street art
Street art is said to have originated in the late 1960s, when young people in New York painted graffiti on subways and building walls. Initially considered an act of vandalism, it is now recognized as a legitimate form of expression that colors the urban landscape and plays an important cultural role in conveying messages to people in public spaces. This exhibition will introduce the technical evolution of street art from its inception to the present day, as well as its social influence.

Introducing the trajectory of the scene with a focus on Banksy
The exhibition will feature the work of Banksy, an anonymous artist who has attracted worldwide attention. The exhibition will focus on the impact of his unique perspective on society, including his signature works "Flying Copper" (2004) and "Choose your weapon" (2010). Works by early artists such as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, as well as contemporary Japanese artists who are active around the world, will also be on display.

Artist Katsuhiko Hibino will be exhibiting from Japan. This exhibition will feature "You can fool your brain, but you can't fool your body #01" (Katsuhiko Hibino/2024), which was shown at Azabudai Hills last year. This is an experimental attempt in which Hibino will perform live painting in the gallery space wearing VR goggles, and the audience will enjoy the work painted in the virtual space through a monitor. In addition, five Japanese street artists, AITO KITAZAKI, CHOB-ONE, JIKKENRAT, Roamcouch, and SUIKO, are scheduled to exhibit.
