"d design travel SHIMANE EXHIBITION" at Shibuya Hikarie Unraveling the unique character of Shimane from the perspective of design and travel
d design travel SHIMANE publication commemoration
2025-03-20
To commemorate the publication of the latest issue of "d design travel," a tourist guide that introduces regional cultures from all over Japan from a design perspective, the "d design travel SHIMANE EXHIBITION" will be held at "d47 MUSEUM" on the 8th floor Shibuya Hikarie from Thursday, March 20th to Sunday, June 29th, 2025.
The exhibition celebrates the publication of the Shimane edition, the 35th in the d design travel series, which introduces the culture and lifestyles of various regions of Japan under the theme of "unique local characteristics." Shimane Prefecture is the birthplace of the word "depopulation," and has been mocked as "Japan's most rural area," as it is the prefecture with the farthest city from Tokyo. However, "I think it's really good that it's in the shadows. It was because it was closed off that a unique history and culture was born, and the unique temperament and spirit of Shimane Prefecture was nurtured and carefully protected for a long time," said Editor-in-Chief Shinto Hideto, who said that this is its one and only charm.
Exhibits that allow you to experience the life and culture of Shimane
The venue will display tools, daily necessities, crafts, and even parts of architecture that are unique to Shimane Prefecture. These items were encountered by the editorial team during their research, and each one is imbued with history and evolution. The aim is for visitors to learn about "existing Shimane design."
The Shimane Products Market will also be open at the venue, with around 200 souvenirs from Shimane Prefecture selected by the magazine's editorial staff. Products made from Iwami Kagura wood waste, clams from Lake Shinji, indigo-dyed products and other local specialties will be on display.
Experience Shimane's food culture with the "Shimane Teishoku"
The "d47 Shokudo" on the same floor serves the "Shimane Teishoku" (Shimane Set Meal), which makes use of traditional dishes and local specialties of Shimane Prefecture. The meal is centered around dried fish, and includes whale rice, clam soup from Lake Shinji, simmered arame (seaweed) from Oki Island, and akaten (fried sardines). The meal will be available from Friday, March 7th to Thursday, July 3rd.
No prior application is required for this exhibition, and admission is by donation. Visitors are free to enter the museum, and by making a donation on their way out, they can contribute to D&DEPARTMENT's long-life design activities. Why not take this opportunity to learn more about the charms of Shimane Prefecture?
