Shibuya's best lunch navigator

He usually works for a major company in Shibuya. In 2012, he started going around eating lunch and posting about it on his blog and social media. Now, he visits restaurants not only in Shibuya, but all over Tokyo and the country.

This week's theme: "Cafe food"

Shibuya boasts numerous cafes that attract people not only with their coffee but also with the appeal of their food. From plate lunches prepared with carefully selected ingredients and cooking methods by the owners, to vegetable-rich set meals and fragrant, spice-infused curries, each cafe offers a dish that will make you want to visit just for the food. The stylish spaces and comfortable interiors are also appealing, allowing you to enjoy your meal at a leisurely pace—a unique feature of these cafes.

The Shibuya area boasts a wide variety of cafes, from coffee stands and traditional coffee shops to chain cafes and restaurants that focus on food. Whether you're taking a break from work or out on a day off, you might find yourself wanting to relax at a cafe for lunch. In fact, it's said that there are over 100 cafes and coffee shops around Shibuya Station.

This time, with the theme of "cafe food," Kago has picked out five cafes that she has actually visited. We will introduce cafes that shine with their own individuality, such as taste, atmosphere, and the owner's passion, from popular spots to hidden gems. Find a cafe that suits your mood.

Five cafes carefully selected by Kago-san

I was very satisfied with the generously sized pork sandwich / Beans Garage Coffee

It's about a 10-minute walk from the JR Shibuya Station New South Exit. From "Shibuya Sakura Stage," walk up the slope lined with restaurants like "Sukiya" and "Shichihou Mala Tang," then turn right at the intersection in front of "Sakuragaoka Post Office" at the bottom of the slope. You'll see a small, shed-like building reminiscent of an American garage in the middle of a residential area.

Shop name: Beans Garage Coffee
Address: 17-9 Uguisudani-cho, Shibuya-ku
This coffee shop opened in 2022. Taking advantage of its spacious, renovated warehouse-like interior, it also sells apparel and other items. Located in a lush, green setting, it also features a terrace seating area. It's not just a place to enjoy coffee; it's also a great spot to drop in for shopping and simply to enjoy the atmosphere. The food menu focuses on sandwiches, offered in generous portions that make for a satisfying lunch.

Kago's recommended points!

I recommend the "Wild Pork Sandwich Set" for lunch. It's much larger than you'd expect, and you'll involuntarily gasp when it arrives. The chewy texture of the thick, long-aged bread, the crispness of the generous amount of cabbage, and the juicy pork belly with a subtle aroma reminiscent of star anise combine to create a delicious and satisfying sandwich packed with ingredients to the very edges. The crispness of the apple pickles included with the sandwich is also impressive, and it's a unique yet surprisingly good combination. The coleslaw served on the side is also crisp and adds to the overall volume.

For my set drink, I chose an iced cafe latte with a strong espresso aroma. Its refreshing taste made for a satisfying end to my lunch. This is a place that's not just "stylish" and comfortable, but also "genuinely delicious."

Enjoy a relaxing lunch with a hearty meal packed with vegetables at REISM STAND

It's about a 6-minute walk from JR Shibuya Station. From Shibuya Sakura Stage, walk along the JR line towards Ebisu and Daikanyama. After walking for a while, turn right onto the street leading towards Sakuragaoka Post Office and Hachiyama Intersection, and you'll see a brick-style exterior on your left.

Store name: REISM STAND
Address: Green Heights Uguisudani, 6-6 Uguisudani-cho, Shibuya-ku
This cafe opened in 2017. Located in a quiet area slightly removed from the hustle and bustle of the city center, the natural-themed interior makes you feel as comfortable as if you were in your living room. Its popularity is evident from the fact that it is often full even at off-peak times. In addition to French toast, they also offer hearty meals made with plenty of vegetables. Rather than just a light cafe meal, it is also suitable for lunch on days when you want to eat something balanced.

Kago's recommended points!

My recommendation is the "Miso Butter Soup with Crispy Chicken Meatballs and Perilla Leaf Aroma." The miso gives it a rich flavor, making it more like a hot pot than a soup, and very satisfying. It's packed with vegetables and other ingredients, and the meatballs have a comforting taste with a hint of ginger. The butter adds a nice accent without being too rich, creating a well-balanced flavor.

The fried chicken, which can be added for an extra 100 yen, is also a must-try. Its juiciness, marinated in salt koji, shines through, making it a standout in this otherwise light lunch. Whether or not you order the fried chicken makes a big difference in your post-meal satisfaction. The set's structure, which allows you to relax even after your meal, is also appealing. The included coffee jelly and drink allow you to unwind after your meal. Since the lunch portions are quite generous, it's best to consider your appetite before adding dessert.

Enjoy a hearty chicken meal at the site of a former theater / Tokyo Salonard Cafe Dub

Located about a 3-minute walk from JR Shibuya Station, the shop occupies the second floor of the older "Fuji Shoji Building" in the Dogenzaka area near SHIBUYA MARKCITY.

Shop name: tokyo salonard cafe : dub
Address: 2F Fuji Shoji Building, 1-11-4 Dogenzaka, Shibuya-ku
Located on the second floor of a multi-tenant building, this hidden gem of a cafe is a renovated former strip club. With its exposed concrete walls adorned with chandeliers and sofas, it features a slightly rebellious atmosphere, typical of Shibuya's "upstaircase" locations.

Kago's recommended points!

I recommend the "Herb Roast Chicken with Ratatouille." The chicken in the daily lunch plate has a rich, flavorful herb taste and is very satisfying. It also comes with side dishes such as salad and kinpira gobo (braised burdock root), so you can get a good balance of vegetables.

Enjoy the meal to the fullest with an extra cup of coffee. The bitter, deep flavor perfectly complements the atmosphere of the shop, making for an even more relaxing experience. The portions are generous, so much so that some people at other tables can't finish their meal. That feeling of being completely full is part of its charm.

Crispy and chewy French toast is a popular item at Ivorish Shibuya.

It's about a 6-minute walk from JR Shibuya Station. It's located on the first basement floor of a building just before the Tobu Hotel on Koen-dori Street. Look for the large glass windows and the large "Ivorish" visual displayed on the windows.

Store name: Ivorish Shibuya
Address: 3-3 Udagawa-cho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo B1F
This French toast specialty shop opened in 2014. While it features many dessert-style French toast options, it also offers savory French toast dishes. It's a popular spot that sometimes has long lines on weekends, and many international visitors come for brunch.

Kago's recommended points!

I recommend the "thick-cut bacon." The French toast, made with brioche, has a crispy exterior and a chewy interior. Unlike the dessert versions, it has grated cheese added to the egg mixture, giving it a more substantial, meal-like feel.

The ingredients include thick-cut bacon, spinach, mozzarella, and fried onions, and it's finished with a drizzle of maple syrup for a sweet and savory flavor. It's served with a side salad and is quite filling. Another plus is that you can enjoy a surprisingly relaxed meal there on weekdays.

Enjoy a generous salad plate with a rooftop garden view / Pangaea Cafe & Bar

Located on the 10th floor of Shibuya PARCO (DG Building), approximately a 5-minute walk from JR Shibuya Station. Look for the round logo displayed on the glass exterior facing the rooftop garden "ROOFTOP PARK".

Shop name: Pangaea Cafe & Bar
Address: 15-1 Udagawa-cho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, Shibuya Parco DG Building 10F
This organic-focused cafe opened in 2020. It offers meals such as salad plates and curry, served in seating areas with a rooftop garden view. They emphasize carefully selected coffee beans, focusing on sustainable practices.

Kago's recommended points!

We recommend the "Pangea Salad Plate," which comes with a drink. It's a hearty salad packed with vegetables, including mushrooms, and the Caesar dressing and generous portion make it very satisfying. You can enjoy the accompanying toast however you like, by dipping it in olive oil or topping it with salad and eggs to make an open-faced sandwich.

After your meal, we recommend choosing the coffee that comes with the set. It's strong yet easy to drink, and apparently it's an original blend using organic JAS certified beans. Located on the upper floors of Shibuya PARCO, it's also appealing because you can spend time quietly in a tranquil, hidden-away space overlooking the rooftop garden.

Above, we introduced five cafes in Shibuya that offer delicious meals. The lineup is diverse, ranging from hearty sandwiches and comforting vegetable dishes to indulgent French toast. However, Shibuya's cafe culture isn't just about being "trendy." Finally, as a bonus, we'll introduce a long-established coffee shop where you can enjoy a leisurely cup of coffee while still savoring the aftertaste of your lunch.

[Bonus Episode] Enjoying fragrant toast at a coffee shop that's been around for 50 years / Aoyama Ichibankan Shibuya Store

It's about a 7-minute walk from JR Shibuya Station. From the Namikibashi intersection, head up Hachiman-dori towards Roppongi-dori, and you'll find it on your right. Look for the weathered brick exterior and the black sign with gold lettering.

Store name: Aoyama Ichibankan Shibuya Store
Address: 1-4-27 Higashi, Shibuya-ku
This coffee shop opened in 1973. Its charm lies in its exterior, reminiscent of early Showa-era British style, and its warm interior furnished with wooden chairs and tables. Located in a quiet area a short distance from the station, it offers a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.

Kago's recommended points!

I recommend the "Service Set" for lunch. The thickly toasted bread is crispy and fragrant on the outside, and the simple ham is complemented by the richness of the butter and onion sauce.

The thick-cut potato chips, served with banana and fruit jelly, are a delightful touch that evokes the Showa era. Coffee is the standard drink pairing, and the siphon-brewed cup has a light bitterness reminiscent of a coffee shop, yet is easy to drink—a surprisingly fresh feeling these days.

Summary of cafe food

Looking at Shibuya's cafe scene, chain restaurants are prominent around the station, but if you venture a little further, you'll find a significant increase in independent shops and unique establishments. According to Kago-san, interesting places tend to be found in areas about 400 to 600 meters outside of Shibuya Station, with hidden gems lurking at the top of Sakuragaoka Hill, on the upper floors and basements of multi-tenant buildings, and on the upper floors of commercial facilities.

Furthermore, Shibuya's cafes are not just the typical "cafe-like cafes," but many also incorporate elements of dining, bars, pasta, and hamburgers. It could be said that the range of food options is so wide that it's difficult to define what a "cafe" truly is. Moreover, independent cafes tend to change their menus more frequently, and the "speed of change"—the ability to flexibly adapt based on customer feedback—is one of their charms.

The five cafes introduced here, plus a bonus selection, represent the wide variety of cafe food available in Shibuya. If any of them catch your eye, try them out for lunch. You might just see Shibuya in a slightly different light.
