This is Shibuya arugula growing rapidly at River Street Farm along the Shibuya River!
In fact, these flowers are edible. They contain nectar, giving them a slight sweetness and the natural flavor of arugula, making them a great addition to a salad.
Oops, I got off topic.
When these flowers begin to wither, the small pods begin to fill with seeds.
Harvesting the seeds that are produced in this way is called self-harvesting. In this way, by sowing the seeds, harvesting them, leaving some to flower, and harvesting the seeds, you can continue to enjoy Shibuya arugula in a cycle of sowing the seeds, harvesting, and harvesting the seeds again.
That way, you too can enjoy these delicious sandwiches in the comfort of your own home, over and over again.
Shibuya River Street Farm is run in collaboration with LFC.
We are putting this into practice with the desire to expand the cycle of circulation that is possible from urban life, by composting food waste from households, using that compost to make soil for fields and growing vegetables. However, growing our own vegetables in this way is in accordance with the laws of nature, and it is thanks to the circulation of seeds that has been passed down continuously since ancient times when agriculture was born that we are able to have so many vegetable seeds.
To be more serious, what do you think would happen if we stopped collecting seeds in this way?
In other words, seeds are the "present" that has been passed down from the past, and sowing those seeds and harvesting them yourself also plays a role in delivering those seeds to the "future."
Now, let's start collecting seeds so that we can deliver Shibuya arugula seeds to the Shibuya of the future!
So, this is the first part of our Shibuya arugula seed collecting mission.
The mission is simple: just harvest the arugula that has grown so much.
Cut the arugula stalks with a sickle or scissors.
Pull it out with a bang.
If you carry it in busily,
Ta-da! You've harvested arugula plants with lots of seeds.
By the way, with this many plants you can harvest enough seeds for 1,000 people to sow!
That's all for this operation!
Now bring this to a place where it is not exposed to rain and leave it to dry for a while, and once it has turned brown the arugula seeds will pop out of the pods!
To everyone who has enjoyed the deliciousness of Shibuya Arugula at the Shibuya Arugula Sandwich Workshop so far, to those who have taken the Shibuya Arugula Seed Sowing, Composting and Soil Preparation course the other day, to those who want to start harvesting at home, let's all join together and do this incredibly mundane task to pass on this delicious, beautiful, and fun-to-grow Shibuya Arugula to future generations!
