Parent-child astronomy class in the Shibuya night sky and moon observation event at "Shibuya Sky"

There is also a workshop where you can make your own original binoculars.

The "ROOFTOP Astronomical Observation SHIBUYA Parent-Child Program," an experiential event where parents and children can observe the moon and stars, will be held on March 26th and 27th at "SHIBUYA SKY," the observation facility at the top of SHIBUYA SCRAMBLE SQUARE.

The project will be supported by Vixen (Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture), a comprehensive optical equipment manufacturer. The theme of the event is "Astronomy Classroom Above Shibuya." Participation is limited to pairs of parents and children (one adult and one child). The first half will be a classroom-style "Learning About the Moon" class, which will introduce topics related to the moon, such as lunar exploration and space travel, in an easy-to-understand manner. Afterwards, there will be a workshop where participants can decorate and create their own original binoculars. Participants can take the completed binoculars home and enjoy observing at home.

In the second half of the day, the group will move to the rooftop observation space "SKY STAGE" and observe the moon using handmade binoculars and an astronomical telescope. The moon that will rise on the 26th will be a "waxing crescent moon," and the shadows created at the edge of the crescent will make it easier to see the topography of the moon, including craters and mountain ranges. Parents and children will look up at the night sky while searching for the lunar topography and landing sites for lunar exploration that they learned about in the classroom. In addition to the moon, they are also planning to observe Jupiter and the Pleiades star cluster.

The event will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on both days and is aimed at 4th to 6th grade elementary school students, with a participation fee of 7,000 yen per group.

Shibuya Sky holds stargazing events every month, and from April onwards, it plans to hold seasonal astronomy events such as viewing Jupiter and the Moon, observing the Big Dipper and Venus, stargazing on Tanabata, and viewing the harvest moon. Looking up at the night sky from a high-rise building in the city will likely be an opportunity for parents and children to deepen their interest in space.
