Shibuya Hikarie hosts 8 days of discussions on the future of the ocean and people, bringing sustainable fishing practices to the city

There will also be a talk session where participants will share their on-site knowledge.

An exhibition event introducing efforts by fishermen across the country to preserve marine resources for the future, "The Sea and People: Human Ingenuity in Living with the Sea," will be held at aiiima on the 8th floor of Shibuya Hikarie from August 23rd to 31st. The event is organized by UMITO Partners, a consulting company in the field of marine sustainability.

The event will feature an installation that combines video, sound and commentary to introduce the various ingenuity being put into practice by local fishermen in response to the current situation of declining seaweed beds, rising seawater temperatures, and declining biodiversity and fish stocks along the coast of Japan. The event will be co-hosted by POST studio, a creative studio that aims to create a sustainable world with the theme of "food."

The exhibit introduces case studies from five regions, including "barrel fishing" to protect giant octopus resources in Tomamae Town, Hokkaido, oyster farming and seaweed bed restoration in Oku Town, Okayama Prefecture, improving the quality of sea urchins by preserving kelp beds on Yagishiri Island, Hokkaido, and the utilization of harvested kelp and innovative sardine distribution in Hiroo Town, Hokkaido. All of these efforts aim to balance fishing with local life while reducing the burden on marine resources and the ecosystem.

They will discuss the current state of coastal areas, examples of fisheries improvement, and the nature of sustainable food, incorporating their own on-site knowledge (advance reservations required, participation fee 1,000 yen).

The exhibition will be open from 11:00 to 20:00 (finishing at 17:00 on the last day). For more details and to make reservations for talk sessions, please visit the special website (https://umito-hitoto.peatix.com).
