The selection ceremony for "New Words of the Year 2025, Selected by Dictionary Compilers," sponsored by Sanseido, will be held at Tokyo Culture Culture on December 3rd.

This annual project brings together dictionary editors and language researchers to select a new Japanese word that symbolizes the year. Based on the knowledge and wisdom of dictionary editors, the words that will be frequently heard and widespread in 2025 will be selected as a "record of the times." The words selected are not simply buzzwords, but words that show signs of becoming established and would not be out of place in dictionaries in the future. The selection committee and editorial staff will rigorously review the words from a fair and impartial perspective to determine the top 10.

The announcement will be held in collaboration with "Japanese Dictionary Night," an entertainment event popular among Japanese dictionary fans. In the first part, the top 10 selected new words will be announced along with their hypothetical definitions (explanations of the words) as they would have been included in each dictionary. Ono Masahiro, editorial committee member of Sanseido's Modern New Japanese Dictionary; Iima Hiroaki, editorial committee member of Sanseido's Japanese Dictionary; and Yamamoto Koichi, editor-in-chief of the Daijirin editorial department, will take to the stage to talk about the word of the year from the perspective of dictionary professionals.

In the second part, members of "Japanese Dictionary Night" will appear and will make a humorous remark on the selected words. It will be a hilarious two hours of dictionary-filled fun, including hilarious slides and talk shows. The event will be hosted by announcer Junko Toyoda and Japanese dictionary fan Eri Konno.

Sanseido's "New Word of the Year" project has attracted attention as an attempt to capture the "breath of words" that cannot be captured by mere buzzwords. This year, too, a number of words that reflect the era of 2025 will be selected by the people who compile the dictionary.
