"Hans Wegner Exhibition" at Shibuya Hikarie, featuring 200 classic Scandinavian chairs
Oda Collection
2025-11-27
The largest retrospective exhibition in Japan of Danish furniture designer Hans Wegner, known as the "master of chairs," "Oda Collection Hans Wegner Exhibition: Supreme Craftsmanship," will open on December 2nd at the Hikarie Hall on the 9th floor Shibuya Hikarie. The exhibition is organized by Bunkamura.
Wegner created over 500 chairs in his lifetime and is known as a symbol of Scandinavian design for his designs that take advantage of the characteristics of wood and his ergonomic comfort. The exhibition will display over 200 pieces and documents from the "Oda Collection," which was collected over half a lifetime by chair researcher Noritsugu Oda, professor emeritus at Tokai University, and introduce the essence of his design philosophy and craftsmanship.

The venue was designed by architect Tsuyoshi Tane (ATTA). Tane explains, "Wegner's chairs are a fusion of insight into wood and the pinnacle of human handicraft, making them a 'supreme design' that harmonizes with any culture or era," and will visualize the spirit of craftsmanship through the vast exhibition space.

To commemorate the opening, a talk event will be held with Oda and Tane. In addition, there will be a talk (with soup) titled "Danish Life and Food" by culinary expert Rika Yukimasa and Soup Stock Tokyo space designer Asako Inoue, allowing visitors to experience furniture culture from multiple angles.
The shop inside the venue will be selling limited edition special models of Wegner's masterpieces, "The Chair" (PP Møbler) and "Y Chair" (Carl Hansen & Son), as well as a pop-up cafe serving coffee from the popular Danish brand "The Coffee Collective."
This design exhibition, where Nordic aesthetics and Japanese craftsmanship resonate with each other, is likely to provide an opportunity to reconsider the essence of manufacturing.
The exhibition will run until January 18, 2026.
