渋谷Bunkamuraで高木由利子写真展 世界12カ国の作品約100点を展示

The current exhibition room's "final exhibition" in conjunction with Shibuya Fashion Week

On March 10th, a photo exhibition by photographer Yuriko Takagi entitled "Threads of Beauty 1995-2025 - Wearing Time, Wearing the Wind" opened at Bunkamura The Museum.

The exhibition is being held in conjunction with Shibuya Fashion Week, an event that promotes fashion and culture in the city. Yuriko Takagi was born in Tokyo in 1951. After studying graphic design at Musashino Art University, she studied fashion design at Trent Polytechnic in the UK and worked as a freelance designer in Europe. She then became a photographer, producing unique works that examine "human existence" through clothing and the human body. This will be Takagi's first solo exhibition at a Tokyo art museum, and will feature approximately 100 works taken around the world, examining the diversity of people and cultures through the themes of "dressing" and "beauty."

An exhibition space that makes you feel like you're traveling from Shibuya to the world

The exhibition is divided into eight themes, each of which is called a "Village." The venue was designed by Paris-based architect Tsuyoshi Tane of ATTA, who created an experiential exhibition space that feels like a journey through 12 countries around the world, starting from Shibuya.

The venue is lined with a collection of works using large, tent-like pieces of fabric as a support. The exhibition features dynamic combinations of fabric and photography, such as photographs printed on bamboo washi paper and sewn onto the fabric, creating a space reminiscent of nomadic life. Materials include Komatsu Matere's "KONBU" fabric and mud-dyed cotton, incorporating elements of handcraft throughout.

The exhibition also takes environmental considerations into account, with the acrylic boxes and carpets used being recycled from items used in previous exhibitions at the museum.

A new video that resonates with the streets of Shibuya

The second half of the exhibition will see the premiere of a new video, "Simultaneous Clothing: SHIBUYA × THE OTHER SIDE," which combines footage Takagi shot in the streets of Shibuya before the COVID-19 pandemic with his photo series "Threads of Beauty." The work explores individuality and identity through the attire of people passing through the city, and is structured to overlap the theme of the exhibition with Shibuya, the city of fashion.

The project was designed as an exhibition linked to the city, including a route from Hachiko Square in front of JR Shibuya Station to Bunkamura, following billboards and flags around the city. It proposes an experience where art, fashion, and urban culture intersect in the bustling city of Shibuya.

The "final exhibition" in the current exhibition room

The venue, Bunkamura The Museum, is about to expand and move to a new facility, so this exhibition will be the last to be held in the current exhibition room. The moving walls at the venue will be removed, and concrete walls and air conditioning ducts that had been hidden until now will be exposed, allowing the exhibition space, which has a history of about 40 years, to be seen as it is.

During the exhibition, related works and special edition books will be on sale at Morioka Bookstore Bunkamura The Museum store inside the venue. On March 14th and 15th, Takagi will also be holding a signing session for those who purchase the photo book (first 50 people each day).

Opening hours are from 13:00 to 20:00 (last entrance 19:30). Admission is free. The exhibition will run until March 29th.
