Seibu Shibuya and Tokyu Department Store collaborate for the "final" time: Former rivals offer each other encouragement.
2026-09-01
With only 30 days left until its closure, Seibu Shibuya Store began a collaborative project with its long-time rival, Tokyu Department Store, on September 1st. The two companies, which have competed in Shibuya for generations, are expressing their gratitude and respect to each other as "partners who have helped build Shibuya together" as Seibu Shibuya Store concludes its 58-year history.

Seibu Shibuya Store opened in 1968. In Shibuya, the Tokyu Group, centered around Tokyu Department Store, already had a wide range of businesses including commerce and transportation. After Seibu's entry, the two groups engaged in fierce competition in various fields such as fashion, culture, and entertainment, using the city as their stage.

On the Seibu side, the former Saison Group, along with Parco and others, has been a source of youth culture, art, and music. On the Tokyu side, through department stores and commercial facilities, they have created a lively atmosphere in the area, and each has supported the development of Shibuya while showcasing its own distinct character.
Subsequently, the commercial landscape of the area changed due to factors such as the collapse of the bubble economy, the restructuring of the Seibu Group, and large-scale redevelopment around Shibuya Station. Tokyu Department Store Toyoko branch closed in 2020, and Tokyu Department Store Main Branch closed in 2023. Seibu Shibuya branch will also close at the end of September this year, bringing its 58-year history to a close.

In this project, the two companies, which once competed and pushed each other to improve, are positioned not as "rivals," but as "partners who have worked together to disseminate fashion, culture, and entertainment, and have shaped Shibuya." A key visual embodying the aspirations of both companies has been created and will be displayed on posters and digital signage at Seibu Shibuya, Shibuya Tokyu Food Show, ShinQs by TOKYU DEPARTMENT STORE in Shibuya Hikarie, Tokyu Food Show Edge SHIBUYA SCRAMBLE SQUARE, and the Shibuya underground shopping area. The project will also be promoted on each store's official social media accounts.

An advertisement announcing the closure of Seibu Shibuya store is being displayed on the "Shibuya Station Big Digital Signage".
From September 20th to 23rd, the first 5,800 customers who spend 2,200 yen or more at participating stores will receive an original folding fan. Participating stores include designated sales areas on each floor of Seibu Shibuya Store A and B buildings, the basement floors 1 to 5 of ShinQs in Shibuya Hikarie (excluding some areas), "+Q Beauty" and "+Q Goods" in SHIBUYA SCRAMBLE SQUARE, and "Dress Table by ShinQs Beauty Palette" inside SHIBUYA109 Shibuya.
From September 1st to 13th, a campaign will also be held using the official X accounts of Seibu Shibuya and Tokyu Department Store. Ten people will be randomly selected from those who follow both accounts and repost the designated posts to receive a gift set of sweets recommended by both companies.
From 6 PM on September 4th, community FM station "Shibuya no Radio" will broadcast a special program titled "Thank You Seibu Shibuya Store! A First and Last Collaboration Special with Tokyu Department Store." The broadcast will run until 6:55 PM.

For over half a century, Seibu and Tokyu have shaped Shibuya's commerce and culture, sometimes competing with each other. Now, as Seibu Shibuya Store approaches its closure, they are collaborating for the first and last time, expressing their gratitude to one another and sending a message of support for Shibuya's future.
The event runs until September 30th.
