He was the chairman of the Japan Medical Device Association and held leadership roles at Terumo Corporation until 2016. He then dedicated his career to medical technology innovation and university education, advising startups and public companies in the field. In 2023, he wrote "Design Thinking and Medical Device Innovation," providing valuable insights at the intersection of medicine and technology.

With a distinguished career as CEO in several high-tech industries, Stephan has led companies in factory automation, sealing technology and medical technology. His areas of expertise are strategic leadership, business transformation and cross-border innovation. He holds degrees in Physics (MSc), Materials Science (PhD) and Business Administration (MBA). Since coming to Japan in 1992, he has been deeply involved in German-Japanese business relations and has spent more than half his career living and working in Japan.

Based in Tokyo, Dr. Kawakubo holds a PhD in Business Administration and Economics from the University of Düsseldorf and is an experienced international marketing and business development professional, having previously held various positions in marketing and management at Henkel, including as Regional Market Strategy Manager, as well as serving as Executive Board Member and Vice Chairman of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan (AHK Japan).
