Daikanyama T-Site to hold "Love and Public Interest" exhibition by Eiichi Shibusawa, the face of the new 10,000 yen note; talk by Naoki Matayoshi

To commemorate the issuance of the new 10,000 yen bill featuring Eiichi Shibusawa's portrait, a special exhibition, "Love and Public Interest: The World Eiichi Shibusawa Envisioned," will be held at Daikanyama T-Site from Tuesday, July 2, 2024 to Monday, July 15, 2024 (national holiday).

Eiichi Shibusawa, known as the father of the Japanese economy, was a businessman who, armed with the ideas of the Analects and his ingenuity, established businesses necessary for the modernization of Japan, such as banks, railways, gas, and hotels. He is also known for his efforts in solving social issues such as welfare, education, and urban development. His portrait has been chosen to appear on the new 10,000 yen banknote, which will be issued on July 3, 2024.

Rikuto Yoshida, the artist behind this collaborative piece

This special exhibition is co-hosted by the Shibusawa Eiichi Memorial Foundation and Heralbony, which has a licensing agreement with intellectually disabled artists, and will feature original art by artist Yoshida Rikuto. Yoshida was born in 1998 and lives in Shiga Prefecture. Since 2017, he has been drawing at Yamanami Kobo, a welfare facility for people with disabilities, and has been working silently on his creations, using motifs of what he likes and is interested in at the time. There are no particular rules, and he creates his works with his own unique sensibility and free imagination.

At the venue, ten works in which Yoshida Riku has modified portraits of Eiichi Shibusawa will be exhibited along with words from Shibusawa.

On July 6th, in addition to Yoshida's public art production, a two-part talk event is also scheduled. In the first part, Yamashita Kazukazu, director of Yamanami Kobo, the studio to which artist Yoshida belongs, and Shibusawa Takuko, director of the Shibusawa Eiichi Memorial Foundation, will talk about what prompted this initiative. In the second part, comedian Matayoshi Naoki and Heralbony representative Matsuda Takaya will take to the stage to talk about the power of laughter and art.

Related goods for sale at the venue

Additionally, related goods such as postcards (300 yen excluding tax), drip coffee (540 yen excluding tax), a set of three stickers (1,400 yen excluding tax), and eco-bags (3,000 yen excluding tax) will also be sold at the venue.
