Maho Arakawa "2km radius from Tenouchi"
- A workshop where you can become a bee and "collect" samples from the streets of Shibuya together with artists -
【Overview】
A workshop set in the streets of Shibuya by artist Arakawa Maho, who is currently studying at the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School.
The motif is honeybees, who "discover" and "collect" nectar and pollen, which are their energy sources, within a 2km radius of the hive. Inspired by their ecology, participants will experience the process of "discovering" and "collecting" realistic, tangible scenes within a 2km radius of SHIBUYA CAST.
The workshop starts on the 13th floor of SHIBUYA CAST. By actually going there and observing the scenery below, participants are encouraged to feel the hidden energy of Shibuya and take photos to share with the community.
Maho Arakawa will incorporate the fragments of energy that you have collected into an installation piece using a kaleidoscope structure.
Site-specific art created in the streets of Shibuya.
This is a workshop where participants can bring the seeds of their creativity and experience how a piece of work is created.
We look forward to your participation.

[Message from Maho Arakawa]
- Sharing the experience of seeing the familiar Shibuya cityscape from the perspective of bees -
Bees and humans live in the same city, but in different societies.
Bees use the sunlight as a guide to gather energy inside the hive and produce honey.
This time, you will be taking part in a workshop in which you will take off from the 13th floor SHIBUYA CAST, like a honeybee that continues to gather food to survive, and explore the area to find power spots and things with high energy from a "MORE-THAN-HUMAN" perspective.
By capturing, verbalizing, and discussing energy, this is an attempt to visualize the meaning and potential of a city that is constantly developing and changing.
I will use the mechanisms of a kaleidoscope to turn the photos you collect into an installation.
I hope that this work will allow people to feel the concentration of energy in the city when they look through a kaleidoscope.
I am very much looking forward to interacting with the pieces of energy that you all will be collecting.
[New Social Meeting]
This event will be held as Vol. 2 of the "New Social Meeting," part of the Shibuya New Social Project which launched in April 2024.
What is New Social?
This coined term was inspired by the keyword "MORE-THAN-HUMAN" in multispecies anthropology. It aims to create a better and more sustainable -New Social- by reaffirming the position of humans as part of nature and taking inspiration from the perspectives and sociality of creatures that are better able to communicate with nature than we humans are.
At the extended family Cift, which is currently operating on the 13th floor of SHIBUYA CAST, they are exploring the direction of events and shared spaces as part of the "Shibuya New Social Project."
