Gather 'round! The world of analog computers – Hints for calculations using everyday objects – (QWS Academia, Tokyo University of Science)

Is the analog world we live in already obsolete?

[SHIBUYA QWS original program "QWS ACADEMIA"]

This is a program in collaboration with universities that allows students to encounter "unknown questions." At universities, there are students and researchers who are facing a wide variety of "questions." "QWS ACADEMIA" is not just a class where knowledge is transmitted, but aims to stimulate each other in both directions and create a chemical reaction.

—Year 20xx. With the rise of AI, the Earth is digitally dominated—

Um, is the analog world we live in already obsolete...?

Actually, something called an "analog computer" has also been proposed.
Water, living things, DNA, and quantum behavior. Can we really do calculations with this?!

No specialized knowledge required! Two hours where students and working professionals alike can take home the seeds of new ideas.
From today onward, everything around you will start to look like a "calculator."

Enjoy a moment of digital detox that will gently stimulate your brain.

◆Speakers

Shoya Yasuda
Representative, Vignette & Clarity LLC
He holds a PhD in Science. He founded his company while still a graduate student (certified as a Tokyo Tech spin-off venture). He also serves as a researcher at Tokyo University of Science (formerly Tokyo Institute of Technology) and a part-time lecturer at Tokyo Metropolitan University. His specialties are immune cells, mathematical models, and simulations. In addition to launching bio-ventures and serving as a science advisor, he has taught numerous courses in data analysis and quantum annealing, and has organized and supported many science workshops for children. He challenges the implementation of his research in society from both a cross-disciplinary perspective and a business standpoint.

Ken Komiya
- Associate Senior Researcher, Department of Life and Earth Sciences, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC)
He holds a PhD in Science. After completing his graduate studies at the University of Tokyo, he held positions such as Assistant Professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology before assuming his current position. His specialties are DNA computing, molecular robotics, and wet artificial life. He is working on the construction of life-like systems without black boxes and the development of autonomous molecular machines using biomolecules such as DNA as materials. He has received awards such as the 2020 Bioindustry Encouragement Award and the 2021 Kenshin Kakuchi Memorial Award. He is promoting cutting-edge research and science communication that connects information, matter, and life.

Minato Yuichiro
- Representative Director, blueqat Inc.
Born in Tokyo. Graduated from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Tokyo. After working at Kengo Kuma & Associates, he founded MDR (now blueqat) Inc. in 2008. In 2015, his project was selected as a finalist for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' InnoVation program. From 2017 to 2019, he served as a PM assistant for the Cabinet Office's ImPACT Yamamoto Project. From 2019 to 2021, he was an advisor for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's PRESTO program in the field of quantum information. Since 2022, he has been the chairman of the SEMI Quantum Computing Council.

・Yu Aoki
・Tokyo University of Science, School of Environmental and Society Science and Engineering, 2nd year master's student
A graduate student is bravely and diligently tackling the previously impossible task of researching and developing a lunar subsurface radiation transfer model for lunar resource exploration. Currently analyzing lunar flyby observation data from the Submillimetre Wave Instrument (SWI) terahertz spectrometer aboard the European Space Agency's (ESA) first large-scale mission, Jupiter's Icy Moons Exploration (JUICE). This up-and-coming researcher comprehensively handles everything from model development and data analysis to simulations, providing technological support for next-generation space exploration.

【ABOUT SHIBUYA QWS】
SHIBUYA SCRAMBLE SQUARE opened on November 1, 2019, directly connected to and above Shibuya Station. SHIBUYA QWS (hereinafter QWS) is a members-only facility located on the 15th floor. With the concept of "Not just asking, not just meeting, not just creating, but changing the world," the facility aims to create a movement that leads to unknown value by intersecting the [questions] of players with diverse backgrounds.
