The interactive art event "Rintaro Hara + Yu Hara Interactive Art 'Summer Children are Like Bees. City Children are Like Spheres!'" will be held at Shibuya Hikarie 8/COURT and 8/CUBE from August 22nd.
As part of the "SHIBUYA WANDERING CRAFT 2026" craft event held on the 8th floor Shibuya Hikarie, the artist unit "Hara Rintaro + Hara Yu," consisting of installation artist Hara Rintaro and painter Hara Yu, will exhibit interactive works that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike.
This project was conceived against the backdrop of decreasing opportunities and places for children to play freely in cities due to the intense summer heat and restrictions on ball games in parks, with the aim of creating a space where children can play to their heart's content indoors through art. The event title, "Children of Summer, Like Bees," is a combination of "bee" and "8," referring to the 8th floor of Shibuya Hikarie. It was inspired by the bee's habit of using the "figure-eight dance" to communicate the direction and distance of flowers to its companions. On the other hand, "Children of the City, Like Balls" expresses the hope that children will move around freely like balls.
The venue will feature various art installations, including "Shibuya Figure-Eight Sugoroku," which incorporates the history and culture of Shibuya; "Logos Garden," where players create sentences by combining words written on building blocks; and a ping pong table as an art piece that can be enjoyed by multiple people. Works based on ping pong include "Musashino Three-Person Ping Pong," where three people can enjoy rallies simultaneously; "Marimba Ping Pong," where sounds resonate in accordance with the movement of the ball; and "Geometric Ping Pong," which features geometric designs. Works combining air hockey and abstract art will also be presented.
Furthermore, there will be a self-guided workshop called "Sticky Bug Collection" where participants can attach colored paper cutouts of insects, animals, plants, and other creatures to a white cardboard tree. Participation is free and no prior registration is required.
Rintaro Hara + Yu Hara are an artist unit that creates interactive works based on the theme of "playgrounds" that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. They have participated in events such as the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale and the Setouchi Triennale, and have presented their works both domestically and internationally.
Opening hours are 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. On the final day, August 30th, it will close at 5:00 PM. Admission is free.
