SPBS Main Store will be holding a talk event on the theme of "local culture" to coincide with the fair at Morioka's popular bookstore BOOKNERD, which will start on Saturday, August 9, 2025.
Where does culture come from and how does it spread?
Owner Hayasaka Daisuke founded the independent bookstore BOOKNERD in the regional city of Morioka and has nurtured the community through his daily operations.
Morita Fukui, the representative of SHIBUYA PUBLISHING & BOOKSELLERS, has been editorially creating a local cultural sphere known as "Oku-Shibuya" in Shibuya, an area in the western part of the metropolis of Tokyo.
Naoko Naku is a book designer originally from Morioka who has translated the land and culture from the perspective of designing the "outside of the book" - the binding.
We will welcome three people who have each developed their own culture through different approaches, and ask ourselves the questions, "What is culture?" and "What is local?"
Bookstores, coffee shops, record shops - why small places can become cultural hubs.
How do the unique local climate and the atmosphere that attracts young people coexist?
What is the boundary between high culture and low culture (subculture)?
--And who is nurturing these "seeds of culture," where, and how?
Regions and individuals, places and books, perspectives and design.
Please join us for a quiet yet passionate conversation between three practitioners.
