Leos Carax's legendary masterpiece "The Lovers on the Bridge" is remastered in 4K

Released nationwide from December 20th at Eurospace in Shibuya and other locations

The masterpiece "The Lovers on the Bridge" (1991), by the French genius director Leos Carax, will be released in a 4K remastered version at Eurospace in Shibuya and other theaters nationwide from December 20th.

Known as the final installment of the "Alex Youth Trilogy" following "Boy Meets Girl" (1983) and "Dirty Blood" (1986), this film was a huge hit when it was released in Japan in 1992, running for 27 weeks at Cinema Rise in Shibuya.

The setting is the Pont Neuf, Paris' oldest bridge. This is a passionate yet beautiful love story between Alex (Denis Lavant), a homeless street performer, and Michelle (Juliette Binoche), an art student on the verge of going blind. Alex is unable to confess his love, while Michelle is trapped in her past first love. The emotions between the two begin with despair and darkness, and then soar to hope and life. The scene in which the two dance wildly on the Pont Neuf, entangled and shining as fireworks erupt on Bastille Day, remains legendary in film history even 30 years later.

The production was repeatedly halted due to financial difficulties, and was even called a "cursed film," but Carax's passion miraculously bore fruit. There's an anecdote that director Steven Spielberg praised the film after seeing a preview, saying it was "full of intensity, beauty, and imagination." Furthermore, from Japan, Eurospace president Kenzo Horikoshi, who passed away this year, provided financial support, greatly contributing to the completion of the film.

Horikoshi said in a 2014 interview:

"The biggest hit distributed by Eurospace was Leos Carax's The Lovers on the Bridge, released in 1992. It ran for six months at Cinema Rise, breaking all records, from the opening day record to the first week record."

This remastered edition has been restored using the latest technology from the original 35mm negative, and under the supervision of cinematographer Caroline Champetier (Godard's History of Cinema, The Lovers on the Bridge, etc.), this monumental work of 20th century cinema shines with new brilliance.

"The Lovers on the Bridge" depicts loneliness and passion in brilliantly colored images. Now, more than 30 years after its release, why not experience its breathtaking beauty and passion once again on the big screen at Eurospace in Shibuya?
