【EVENT】5.3 (Sun/Holiday) 19:00 Talk event to commemorate the release of Shinichi Takei's book "The History of Record Stores in Shibuya ~ and Beyond: The History of Shibuya's Record Stores, and Something More"
To celebrate the publication of "The History of Record Stores in Shibuya ~ and Beyond: The History of Record Stores in Shibuya, and Something More," we will be holding a book launch talk event.
In the 1990s, Shibuya in Tokyo was known as "the city with the most analog records in the world." With numerous record stores of all sizes clustered around Udagawa-cho, this city attracted vinyl diggers from all over the world. But why did it become such a place? This book begins with that question.
Shinichi Takei is the founder of "Face Records," a record store that has been operating in Udagawa-cho, Shibuya for over 30 years. His personal question, born from his daily experiences working with records, "Where was the first record store in Shibuya?", eventually developed into a full-fledged investigation tracing old maps, documents, and administrative records, evolving beyond the "history of record stores" to an attempt to reinterpret the "history of the city of Shibuya."
What emerges in this process are the Americanization under GHQ occupation, the changing values of people in response, and the larger trends of urban development and the maturation of consumer culture. Tracing the history of Shibuya's record stores is, in itself, an act of tracing the changes in postwar Japanese culture—this book is a unique cultural history study conceived from this perspective.
This book was produced under the guidance of Hiroshi Fujiwara and Tetsuya Suzuki, and has now come to fruition as a single publication.
At this event, we will welcome Shinichi Takei, who will discuss the background to writing this book, the research process, and the memories accumulated in the city of Shibuya. How do we access and reinterpret what has not been recorded and what is in danger of being forgotten? This will be a space to share the very attempt at doing so.
We invite you to participate in this book's attempt to trace the evolution of postwar culture using the specific clues of "Shibuya" and "records," and in the dialogue surrounding it.
