Shibuya Station to undergo a major transformation on July 21st! New commuter routes to change with the construction of the JR New South ticket gates and the West Exit underground walkway [Part 1]
2024-07-18
On Sunday, July 21, 2024, the JR Shinminami ticket gate will be relocated and the West Exit Underground Walkway will be newly opened. As a result, the route across National Route 246 will be changed, significantly changing commuter routes.
The area around Shibuya Station was originally divided into east and west by the JR line and north and south by National Route 246, and for many years the area had a problem with weak pedestrian flow. Furthermore, temporary structures, relocations, and expansions and renovations were frequently carried out within the station during construction, making the area more complicated and hindering mobility.
Shibuya is divided into "East-West" and "North-South" by railways and major roads
In this redevelopment project, pedestrian decks and underground passageways will be installed around the station in order to connect the divided areas, and a multi-level pedestrian flow called an "urban core" will be established around large facilities to improve accessibility.
Access to Sakuragaokacho, Nanpeidai, and Dogenzaka will become much more convenient by using the new "JR Shinminami ticket gate" and "West Exit Underground Passage" that will be relocated and newly constructed on July 21. In this article, we will introduce the areas that will be closed and blocked off near the west exit of JR Shibuya Station, and introduce "recommended commuting routes" that start from the relocated "JR Shinminami ticket gate."
As part of efforts to improve the "city's mobility," on July 21, the "Shin Minami ticket gates of JR Shibuya Station" will be relocated to a location facing the north free passageway connecting the third floor SHIBUYA STREAM and Shibuya Sakura Stage. The previous Shin Minami ticket gates, located closer to Namikibashi (Ebisu side), were originally built on the site of a former freight station, so they were far from the current YAMANOTE LINE and SAIKYO LINE platforms, making them very inconvenient to access. For this relocation, a six-story new station building will be constructed about 250 meters north (Harajuku side) along National Route 246, and the Shin Minami ticket gates will be relocated to the third floor. The relocation of the ticket gates will not only provide direct access to both YAMANOTE LINE and SAIKYO LINE platforms, but is also expected to resolve the long-standing issue of Sakuragaoka-cho being divided and "isolated" by National Route 246, and to revitalize the town.

Starting on Sunday, July 21, it will no longer be possible to use the conventional route from the west exit of JR Shibuya Station. We will introduce the areas that will no longer be passable, as well as a new commuting route that uses the newly constructed "West Exit Underground Walkway" by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's Kanto Regional Development Bureau Tokyo National Highway Office.
