2025-05-23
An exhibition showcasing architect Hiroshi Naito's architectural thinking spanning half a century from various angles, titled "Architect Hiroshi Naito: Red Oni and Blue Oni's Outside the Ring in Shibuya," will be held at SHIBUYA STREAM Hall on July 25, 2025.
Hiroshi Naito
architect
Born in 1950. After completing his master's degree at Waseda University in 1976, he gained experience at the Fernando Higueras Architectural Design Office and Kikutake Kiyonori Architects in Spain, and founded Naito Hiroshi Architects in 1981. He has served as professor and vice president at the University of Tokyo Graduate School, and is currently a professor emeritus. He will serve as president of Tama Art University from 2023. His representative works include the Sea-Floor Museum, Makino Tomitaro Memorial Museum, Shimane Arts Center, and Tokyo Metro Co.,Ltd. GINZA LINE Shibuya Station.
The project, which was held in 2023 at the Shimane Prefectural Iwami Art Museum (in the Shimane Prefectural Arts and Culture Center "Grand Toi") in Masuda City, Shimane Prefecture, and was well received, will be re-arranged and held in the city of Shibuya. The exhibition will introduce 45 projects that Naito has worked on to date through models, drawings, photographs, and videos, centered on the two thinking styles advocated by Naito: "Red Demon = passion and intuition" and "Blue Demon = reason and restraint." The exhibition will be structured so that visitors can get a full view of his trajectory across three floors, from his graduation design from his student days to his representative works "Sea Museum" and "Makino Tomitaro Memorial Museum," as well as his unfinished plan "Unbuilt" (a project that has only been presented and not yet been built) and his latest design proposals.

Of particular note is the city model that displays the contrasting cities of "depopulated Masuda" and "overcrowded Shibuya" side by side. Naito, who has been involved in the large-scale redevelopment of the area around Shibuya Station, including serving as chairman of the "Design Conference" that coordinates architectural design and landscape, presented a bird's-eye view of the future vision of urban development using a 1/200 scale model and video.

Meanwhile, the Masuda city area, centered around the Shimane Prefectural Arts and Culture Center "Grand Toi," will also be reproduced in three dimensions at the same scale, allowing visitors to compare and experience the structures and essential differences between the two cities. In addition, a large-scale model of the "Tokyo Metro Co.,Ltd. GINZA LINE Shibuya Station Platform," with its beautiful M-shaped roof design designed by Naito, is also scheduled to be exhibited.
"Wall of Words," a collection of fragments of Naito's thoughts (from the 2023 exhibition)
Throughout the exhibition, there are videos of Naito himself narrating and words spread out on the walls as "fragments of thoughts," creating an immersive experience that feels like a journey inside the architect's mind.
As a related event, on the first day, July 25th, a performance of "Iwami Kagura," a traditional performing art from the Iwami region of Shimane Prefecture, will be held at SHIBUYA STREAM Inaribashi Square (free admission). In addition, on July 28th, a special lecture by Naito himself is scheduled to be held at the Scramble Hall in SHIBUYA QWS on the 15th floor of SHIBUYA SCRAMBLE SQUARE, providing a rare opportunity to talk about the future of cities and architecture.
Books and original goods will also be on sale at the venue, making this an event not to be missed not only for architecture fans but for a wide range of people with an interest in cities.
The admission fee is 1,500 yen for adults and 1,000 yen for university students and younger. The exhibition will run until August 27th.
