Art from Montreal transforms the city! Fusion of technology and art

Currently, the cultural event "DIG SHIBUYA 2025," which combines technology and art, is being held, with various events taking place in the plazas and facilities around Shibuya Station. Among them, unique art works and projects from Montreal, Canada, are attracting particular attention. Here, we report on three art events that will showcase the appeal of Shibuya, with the cooperation of the Quebec Government Office in Japan.

What is Montreal?

Although it is located in the French-speaking province of Quebec, it is an international city that welcomes immigrants from all over the world. This multicultural background has had a major influence on art, and not only galleries and museums, but also street art such as murals and graffiti are thriving, and art is integrated into everyday life. Montreal is also home to the circus entertainment group "Cirque du Soleil," which is also known in Japan. In recent years, Montreal has also been attracting attention as a city with a concentration of internationally active creative groups and companies in fields such as game development, digital art, and video production.

Turning walls and streets into canvases for live painting! MAPP_SHIBUYA WEEK

"MAPP_SHIBUYA WEEK," an event in collaboration with MAPP, an art project from Montreal, Canada, is being held in outdoor plazas such as SHIBUYA STREAM Deck until February 16th.

MAPP is pursuing and developing the possibilities of projection mapping all over the world, with the vision of "changing the city into a creative playground." The most distinctive feature of the group is the use of a unique bicycle equipped with a projector called the "MAPP_BIKE." While moving around on this bicycle, the group performs a performance in which images are projected onto walls and streets, regardless of location. The appeal of this performance is that it does not require a large-scale setup, and the image expression can be enjoyed flexibly and impromptu.

If you point the projector at it, you can project images onto the clam-shaped wall that pays homage to the old Toyoko Line Shibuya Station building.

During the event, live events will be held at multiple venues, including SHIBUYA STREAM Deck, SHIBUYA CAST Garden, and in front of 100BANCH. Usually, live painting and graffiti are created on walls or the street with paint, but at this event, artists will use iPads to improvise digital illustrations and text with their fingertips and project them onto walls and the street in real time. When the artist swirls the illustration with their fingertips, the projected illustration also rotates, and the size can be freely changed by pinching in and out. Furthermore, by changing the object onto which the illustration is projected, any location can be transformed into a canvas for live painting.

Even adults can't help but get excited when a projector is pointed at them

During the event, there will be workshops open to children and families, where they can enjoy the experience of seeing their own illustrations transformed into street art.

A playground of the future? "ECHO" visualizes sound with light

"ECHO," an interactive installation by Montreal, Canada-based creative studio "mirari," is on display at Miyashita Park in Shibuya until February 18th.

Right) A structure with countless rings lined up in a continuous line. Left) There are sound-collecting microphones on both ends.

"ECHO" is an interactive installation that uses a unique technology that converts words and sounds into light waves and pulses. This time, responsive light visuals created by the TOPPAN DIGITAL SANDBOX team were newly introduced to the exhibition, further enhancing the appeal of the work. Sound-collecting microphones are installed on both ends of the cylindrical structure, which is made up of countless rings. In response to voices and movements, sound waves spread and reach the other side, expressing this through changes in light. By visualizing the movement of sound, which is normally invisible to the naked eye, this work is a perfect embodiment of the fusion of art and technology.

During the day, parents and children can be seen playing happily (photo taken February 8, 2025).

In fact, children playing at Miyashita Park were seen cheering and enjoying themselves, amazed by the interactive sounds and movements of the lights. This space is a place where pure playfulness intersects with the latest technology, and it could be said to expand the possibilities of "play equipment of the future" and "public art."

In addition to being an art piece, it is also recommended for families and people interested in technology. The colorful changes in the light, woven together by voices and lights, are especially easy to see after sunset. The event will run until February 18th.
