This lecture will discuss the relationship between manga and literature from the perspective of a manga artist. The lecturer, Hiroshi Takahama, is one of the most popular female manga artists today. She has received numerous awards, including the 24th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. In 2020, she released a manga version of Marguerite Duras's "L'Amand" in France (Rue de Sèvres), which gained popularity. After that, she made a manga version of French author Muriel Barbery's novel "A Rose in Kyoto" (translated by China Nagata, Hayakawa Publishing, 2022, original Une rose seule, Actes Sud, 2020), and the French and Japanese versions were published almost simultaneously (Rue de Sèvres, LEED Publishing, 2024). The original work was written based on the author's "experience" of living in Kyoto for two years, and Takahama says that he worked on the creation of the work while having conversations with the original author, Barbery. Based on these two experiences, in this lecture Professor Ishikawa will talk about the relationship between manga, which is centered around pictures, and novels, which are purely textual, providing an opportunity to consider the respective characteristics of manga and literature, as well as their points of intersection.
