Shibuya's best lunch navigator

He usually works for a major company in Shibuya. In 2012, he started going around eating lunch and posting about it on his blog and social media. Now, he visits restaurants not only in Shibuya, but all over Tokyo and the country.

This time's theme: "Udagawacho Area"

Udagawacho, the central area of Shibuya, is a bustling hub of youth culture and entertainment. Centered around Shibuya's main street, Basketball Street (Shibuya Center-gai), the area is full of energy, lined with trendy apparel and cosmetics shops, music and art venues, and restaurants serving photogenic food. For this reason, it has become a popular spot visited not only by young people from within Japan, but also by many people from all over the world.

Udagawa area (red area is the area covered this time)

Udagawacho is located in the area between "Shibuya Scramble Crossing" and Bunkamura-dori and Koen-dori, and stretches from LINE CUBE SHIBUYA (Shibuya Public Hall) in the north to Shinsen-cho and Shinsen Station in the west. With "Shibuya PARCO" on Koen-dori and "Hands" on Inokashira-dori, it is an area where you can experience the latest trends in Japan.

This time, Kago-san will introduce us to five restaurants in the Udagawacho area that he recommends for lunch.

Addictive soup pasta is popular / Holmes Pasta

It's a 5-minute walk from JR Shibuya Station, just across from Shibuya Parco and close to Spain Slope. If you go up the stairs to the 3rd floor, you'll find a tasteful retro door.

Store name: Holmes Pasta Shibuya store
Address: 3F Kokusai Building, 13-16 Udagawa-cho, Shibuya-ku
Since its establishment in 1986, the restaurant has been supported by many people. It serves addictive pasta that you will crave every once in a while.

Kago's recommended points!

The recommended dish is "Garlic, Tomato and Chili Pepper." This popular dish has the sour and savory taste of tomatoes and a strong hint of garlic. The chili peppers are also strong, so it's fun to eat it while yelling "Heehee!" It can be topped with cheese, but you can also eat it as is without making it milder. It uses a lot of oil, but the end result is like soup pasta. The "complex" flavor brings out an addictive deliciousness.

There is always a line when you go there around lunchtime. They have stores in "Shibuya Fukuras" and other locations, but started out in this multi-tenant building. The impressive menu item "Zetsubou" (Despair) is also popular. Please try this as well.

Satisfied with the set menu of this 50-year-old izakaya restaurant / Torishou

It's located on the second floor of a building along Inokashira Street, close to Tons. You'll be drawn in by the downtown feel of the entrance.

Store name: Torishou
Address: 2F World Udagawa Building, 36-6 Udagawa-cho, Shibuya-ku
This popular izakaya was founded in 1973. They serve izakaya staples such as yakitori, and the lunch menu is mainly set meals that workers can enjoy.

Kago's recommended points!

The recommended dish is the "Pork Stamina Teppan Set Meal." The hot plate topped with pork, bean sprouts, and fried egg is covered in soy sauce, which makes a sizzling sound that whets your appetite. You can eat it as is, mix the yolk with the pork, or add the kimchi that comes with it, and enjoy the variety of ways to eat it to get excited. The kimchi itself is not too spicy, with a mild spiciness that goes perfectly with rice. The ohitashi and pickles served as palate cleansers are also exquisite.

Also noteworthy is the pork soup, which is actually miso soup. The bowl is packed with burdock, taro, carrots, konnyaku, daikon, and pork, and you can have as many refills as you like. You can also have as much rice as you like... it's a sin for dieters (lol). You're sure to be very satisfied with the nostalgic menu provided by this izakaya that has been in business for 50 years.

The Vice President eats authentic curry from Goa, India / Pork Vindaloo

About a 12-minute walk from JR Shibuya Station. After passing through the bustling Shibuya Center Street, you'll find yourself on the second floor of a multi-tenant building on the calm Udagawa Street. Let's open the green door with trepidation...

Store name: Vice President Eating Pork Vindaloo
Address: 2F Papier Building, 41-26 Udagawa-cho, Shibuya-ku
Opened in 2019, this curry restaurant serves only "pork vindaloo," a dish found in the Goa region of India. It has also been selected as a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant.

Kago's recommended points!

The "Pork Vindaloo" contains pork, which is rare for an Indian curry. It also has a distinctive sour taste that is quite pronounced for a curry. When you actually try it, the spices, spiciness, and flavor all combine together to make it the best. On the counter table are soft-boiled eggs, papadum, and four types of seasonings, so it's fun to arrange them however you like. It's amazing how the same combination of spices can have slightly different flavors depending on how you use them.

The ever-changing flavors never tire of the dish, and before you know it, you've finished it all. A little while after you've finished eating, you'll notice that your body is warm from the core. You'll feel warm from the inside and start to sweat comfortably. There's something about this sensation that makes you feel happy.

The rich soup made from simmered chicken and pork is exquisite / Menya Nukaji

It is located across from Shibuya PARCO, around the corner from the soccer shop KAMO. It only has counter seats and is popular with female customers.

Store name: Menya Nukaji
Address: 1F monostep2, 3-12 Udagawacho, Shibuya-ku
This ramen and tsukemen restaurant opened in 2014. The signature dish is the pork bone and seafood ramen, which pairs perfectly with the medium-thick straight noodles.

Kago's recommended points!

The ramen is a must-try. You can also order it with a seasoned egg as a topping. The thick and rich soup is made by simmering chicken and pork for a long time. It is not as heavy as it looks, probably because it contains ginger, Chinese cabbage, green onion, and a seafood-based soup made from dried saury and kelp.

Above all, the soup and noodles go perfectly together. The slow-cooked, soft pork slices also have a superb taste. The egg-topped rice, which can be added as an extra, is flavored with white soy sauce made from saury stock. The taste is so refined that it's almost a shame to have it as an extra. Overall, I was very satisfied.

You can feel Taiwan in the taste and smell / BOILING POINT

It is a 6-minute walk from JR Shibuya Station, and is located on the 3rd floor of a new commercial building next to MEGA Don Quijote Shibuya Main Store. Look for Zoff's flagship store "Zoff Grand Tokyo Shibuya" on the 1st floor.

Store name: BOILING POINT
Address: 301 Grand Tokyo Shibuya Building, 33-1 Udagawacho, Shibuya-ku
A Taiwanese one-person hotpot restaurant from LA. You can enjoy the authentic taste of Taiwan. They also have a wide selection of drinks, including black tea and sours, made with authentic tea leaves.

Kago's recommended points!

The recommended dish is the "BP Beef Hotpot." The aroma that rises from the pot is reminiscent of a Taiwanese night market. The "Taiwanese" aroma can be felt, and you can feel Taiwan not only from the taste but also from the smell. The dish is a beef hotpot. There are plenty of types of vegetables and the portions are plentiful, so it feels healthy and delicious. The essence of the ingredients is dissolved in the soup, giving it an exquisite taste and texture. Even if you drink only the soup, it is spicy but the flavor is well concentrated.

What did you think of the five restaurants we introduced above? We hope we were able to introduce a wide variety of Japanese and Western restaurants, from healthy to hearty cuisine. Finally, as an extra, we will introduce one restaurant that just started serving lunch in November 2024 (Reiwa 6).

[Extra Edition] A small restaurant that has started serving lunch offers a daily set meal / Kiyoi

It is located 6 minutes on foot from JR Shibuya Station along Udagawa Street. It is across from Udagawa Beer Hall and the entrance has a Japanese feel to it.

Store name: Kiyoi
Address: 36-16-103 Udagawacho, Shibuya-ku
This small restaurant opened in 2018. Two female hosts take turns serving customers in the evenings. Lunch will start in November 2024.

Kago's recommended points!

For lunch, there is only one option: the "Daily Small Dish Set Meal." However, you can choose two from eight main dishes, so there are plenty of options. I'm happy that there is a wide variety of fish and meat options. This time, I chose the well-flavored ginger pork and freshly fried horse mackerel. The sauce is served in a sake cup, which is fun and interesting.

The set meal also comes with five small side dishes selected by the chef. All have a Japanese flavor befitting a small restaurant. The dashi stock is strong, and the taste is gentle and comforting. There is also miso soup with dashi stock, and fluffy rice cooked with Hokkaido Yumepirika rice. It was a hearty set meal where you can taste a variety of dishes in small portions, befitting a small restaurant.

Summary of Udagawa Lunch

The Udagawacho area has a large number of restaurants where you can enjoy a variety of cuisines from around the world. Relatively speaking, there are many chain restaurants in the area close to JR Shibuya Station, and the further away from the station the more unique the restaurants become. In particular, the area around Udagawa Ryokudo is home to a collection of new restaurants that show a glimpse of their adventurous spirit. Also, there are many stylish restaurants in new buildings, while older buildings are often home to long-established restaurants that have been in business for decades. It might also be interesting to go and visit a long-established restaurant in an older building that has a sense of history. It's also fun to go looking for restaurants in the "gaps" of the city (lol).

This trend can be seen just within the Udagawacho area, and lunchtime should be more enjoyable if you try out different places. First of all, if there are any restaurants that interest you among the ones we have introduced this time, be sure to check them out.
