Herbie Yamaguchi Photo Exhibition "HOPE 2024 - 50 Years of Photographing Hope"

Commemorating the appointment of the principal of the Japan Photographic Arts College

To commemorate photographer Herbie Yamaguchi's appointment as principal of Nippon Photography Institute, a special photo exhibition "HOPE 2024 - 50 years of capturing hope" will be held at two venues, Shibuya Hikarie "8/CUBE" and Nippon Photography Institute's 8th floor "Wall Gallery", from June 25th. The exhibition will look back on Yamaguchi's entire career, and will be organized by Torihara Manabu, a photography critic and head lecturer at Nippon Photography Institute.

At the Shibuya Hikarie "8/CUBE" venue, three spaces will be used for the exhibition, starting with his early photo book "1970, Yearning of a Twenty Year Old," his time living in London, and his latest works from the 2000s onwards, including his last shots with the late Ryuichi Sakamoto. In addition, Yamaguchi's work tools, such as cameras and contact sheets, that he used in his early days will also be on display. You can feel the "warmth" of the artist from the various tools that Yamaguchi touched and handled directly during the production process.

At the Nippon Photography Institute's Wall Gallery (Sakuragaokacho, Shibuya Ward), a reconstruction of the beloved masterpiece "Daikanyama No. 17" will be exhibited.

Yamaguchi has continued to capture the loveliness and modest hopes of the world in his career spanning more than 50 years. The exhibition will look back on his footsteps and send encouragement through photography to young people living in these uncertain times. A talk show will also be held in conjunction with the exhibition on Friday, June 28th.

<Profile of new principal Harvey Yamaguchi>

Herbie Yamaguchi
Born in Tokyo in 1950, he moved to London at the age of 23 and lived there for 10 years, working as an actor in a theatre company while devoting himself to photography. During the punk rock movement at the time, his portraits of musicians were highly praised. After suffering from a childhood illness, he has made "hope for life" the theme of his photography and continues to photograph people. He writes essays, is a radio personality, and has written lyrics for guitarist Tomoyasu Hotei. He has also appeared on the TV show "Tetsuko's Room," and is supported by people of all ages. In 2011, he won the Photographic Society of Japan Award for Artist. He has held solo exhibitions and published many books. His artist name "Herbie" comes from the jazz flutist Herbie Mann, whom he greatly admires.

Message from Herbie Yamaguchi on this exhibition
The exhibition included works from when I was in my 20s to my most recent works. The desire to "capture the hope of human life" underlies all of my photographs. I have suffered from caries for more than ten years since shortly after birth, and one day at the end of my teens after recovering from the disease, I had a strong desire to "capture the hope of life." It all started with that. "Press the shutter, praying for the happiness of the other person tomorrow." That is the state of mind when I hold the camera.
