Meeting the needs of workers in Shibuya: A look at the "full picture of SHIBUYA AXSH"! Also placing importance on connections in the East Exit area

A preview for the media of "SHIBUYA SHIBUYA AXSH," a large complex at the east exit of Shibuya Station that will open on July 8, was held on July 4. Here is an early report on the state of the facility.

What is the Shibuya 2-chome 17th District Urban Redevelopment Project (SHIBUYA AXSH)?

The Shibuya 2-chome 17th District Urban Redevelopment Project is a large-scale redevelopment project centered on the east exit area of Shibuya Station along Aoyama Street, adjacent to Shibuya Hikarie, and the completed building is SHIBUYA AXSH. This project replaced four aging buildings, the Shionogi Shibuya Building (completed in 1980), the Shibuya Ibis Building (completed in 1961, expanded in 1984), the Shibuya Toho Building (completed in 1971), and the Taiyo SHIBUYA AXSH Shibuya Building (completed in 1968), into a single building about 120 meters tall and 23 stories above ground. The name Shibuya AXSH was chosen to convey the meaning of "a place where (X) people and cultures that connect the towns of Aoyama (A) and Shibuya (SH) intermingle and new value is created."

Redevelopment of the Shibuya 2-chome 17 district adjacent to Shibuya Hikarie begins, aiming to open in 2024 (2019/08/30)

Meeting office workers' lunch, break and social needs

SHIBUYA AXSH consists of "commercial" on the 1st to 4th floors and "office" on the 5th to 23rd floors. The offices on each floor, about 1330m2, are already fully occupied, and it is expected that the new working population will be about 2,500 people.

As redevelopment of the area around the station progresses, the office building is positioned as part of Tokyu Group's Shibuya urban development strategy, playing a role in promoting Shibuya's appeal as a place to work.

3rd floor office entrance

If you make a phone call inside the round hanging object in the foreground, the sound is less likely to leak out to the surroundings. Behind it is a workspace, so you can do some light work in the entrance lobby.

The third floor, which is the office entrance, has a green wall and is planted with plants, creating a space where workers and visitors can relax. A workspace (with power outlets) is provided by the window for simple work, providing an environment that can meet the needs of workers in a variety of situations.

The stairwell "Tamariba" can be rented out as an event space.

In addition, a rental event space called "Tamariba" will be set up in a stepped space of about 35 square meters. The space is equipped with a 60-inch monitor and is expected to be used for a wide range of purposes, including meetings, seminars, exhibitions, pop-up stores, and PR events. During periods when no events are being held, the space will be open to the workers who are occupying the building and can be used freely for breaks, meetings, etc.

The atrium is an open-ceiling space on the first and second floors. Restaurants are concentrated on the lower floors.

The commercial floor will house 15 tenants, including restaurants, art galleries, and a health check center. The main features are the extensive international cuisine and cafes.

Left: "Spice Theater," a spice curry restaurant run by an Indian and Nepalese chef; Right: "Chao Thai," a Thai restaurant with a store in Dogenzaka

Left: Cerveza, a Spanish restaurant with over 50 types of craft beer; Right: Nakai Shoten, an izakaya restaurant opened by a long-established salt wholesaler in Nihonbashi for the first time

Left: "hale'aina HOA," a Hawaiian cafe and diner in Onna Village, Okinawa; Right: "TRATTORIA PIZZERIA 207," a popular Italian restaurant in Hayama

The building offers a wide variety of international cuisine, including Hawaiian cafe and diner "hale'aina HOA," spice curry "Spice Theater," Thai restaurant "Chao Thai," Spanish restaurant "Cerveza," Japanese restaurant and izakaya "Shio, Sake, and Snacks Nakai Shoten," and local Chinese restaurant "Gyoza no Mise Okeyi" (scheduled to open in 2025), to meet the needs of workers for lunch and for drinking and dinner with colleagues after work. In addition, there are multiple cafe spaces that can be used for relaxation and meetings between work, such as "Antico Cafe Al Avis" (2nd floor), "Tully's" (3rd floor), and coffee stand "SINGLE O SHIBUYA" (1st floor), which is unique to this office building.

Left: Tully's, the sixth store to open around Shibuya Station. Right: A workspace with power outlets is available inside the Tully's store. Although use is limited to two hours per person, it allows people to concentrate and work even when they need to respond to urgent requests while out and about.

Left: Antico Cafe Al Abis, a cafe based on the concept of a bar found on an Italian street corner. The open terrace seats are perfect for taking a break from work, and right: Antico Cafe Al Abis features a luxurious interior. We also recommend spending your lunchtime here with paninis and seasonal dolce.

Additionally, the art gallery "NANZUKA," scheduled to open on the third floor (scheduled to open in May 2025), will help to alleviate the stiffness and formality of the office building and bring out the cultural flavor that is unique to Shibuya.

The art gallery "NANZUKA" will reopen in May 2025.

NANZUKA UNDERGROUND, a contemporary art gallery that first opened in the basement of the Shibuya Ibis Building in 2005, will reopen in the same location after redevelopment. The gallery currently has galleries at NANZUKA UNDERGROUND in Jingumae 3-chome, 2G in Shibuya PARCO, and 3110NZ by LDH Kitchen in Nakameguro, and this latest opening will mark its fourth location in Tokyo.

Left: NANZUKA TAKEN, an art bar created by the art gallery NANZUKA. The interior is decorated with original works by artists affiliated with the gallery, including Hajime Sorayama's sculptures and Keiichi Tanaami's video works, as well as Hiroki Tsukuda, HR.GIGER, and HAROSHI. Right: Behind a hidden door in the bar is a space for VIPs.

In addition, on the second floor SHIBUYA AXSH, a bar "NANZUKA TAKEN (BAR)" operated by the art gallery "NANZUKA" will open, where you can enjoy drinks in a space surrounded by works of artists from the gallery. After work, it is a great place to deepen your relationship by talking about art in a unique bar.

It will play the role of a "hangout spot" that emphasizes "connections with the East Exit area"

Located behind Shibuya Hikarie, the area originally had few shops and no place for people to gather. SHIBUYA AXSH is therefore based on the concept of "TSUNAGI-BA," which connects areas and people, and will provide not only a place for people to gather, but also time and value for their stay, and will play a role in creating new excitement in the Shibuya Station East Exit area.

"SHIBU Spot" is a plaza located in the direction of Shibuya Station.

Among them, two plazas will be set up as "tamariba" (gathering areas) at the entrances to the Shibuya Station direction and the Aoyama direction. The plaza located on the Shibuya Station direction, named "SHIBU Spot" and reached through the passageway on the second floor of Shibuya Hikarie, will be a new lively space with plans to set up a see-through vision screen and have food trucks set up and sell food.

"AO Spot" is a square located in the Aoyama area.

Meanwhile, in the plaza located in the Aoyama area, named "AO Spot," NANZUKA's public art project "NANZUKA PUBLIC" will provide people passing by the area with the opportunity to come into contact with art. At the time of the opening, a work by the world-renowned French artist Jean Jullien will be installed as the first part of the project.

The first project is Jean Julien's public art piece "The Tank."

The work, entitled "The Tank," is inspired by the artist's childhood memories growing up in a coastal town in Brittany, France, and Disney's Ariel and Studio Ghibli's Ponyo, and depicts sea creatures such as sea bream, horse mackerel, shrimp, and octopus in a humorous way. Julien, who loves sushi, has a strong image of "Japan = fish," and this work shows his love and respect for Japan. The public art will be changed two to three times a year.

Shibuya Hikarie and SHIBUYA AXSH are connected by a pedestrian deck

Furthermore, the neighboring Shibuya Hikarie and SHIBUYA AXSH are so close that they are almost like Building A and Building B, making movement between them extremely smooth.

A new pedestrian network will be formed by passing through SHIBUYA AXSH Museum.

From the subway ticket gates on the third basement floor of Shibuya Hikarie, go up to the second floor Shibuya Hikarie through the Urban Core, and go through the passageway towards Aoyama to reach the entrance to SHIBUYA AXSH on the first floor.

A pedestrian deck connecting the 3rd floor Shibuya Hikarie to SHIBUYA AXSH

Additionally, the third floor (Aoyama side) of Shibuya Hikarie will be connected to SHIBUYA AXSH via a pedestrian deck, allowing for seamless movement between the facilities.

It will be directly connected to the pedestrian bridge that leads to Shibuya Cross Tower, making it possible to move around without worrying about Aoyama-dori (Konnozaka).

The deck continues all the way to Shibuya Cross Tower, greatly expanding the area that can be accessed from the station without getting wet even on rainy days (SHIBUYA AXSH is open from 5am when the first train arrives until 1am when the last train arrives). Going forward, it looks like it will become even more comfortable to travel to Miyamasuzaka-ue, Omotesando/Aoyama, and Shibuya 3-Chome.

SHIBUYA AXSH will open at 11am on July 8th.
