An exhibition commemorating the conclusion of the manga series "Space Brothers," titled "The Complete Space Brothers Exhibition," began on July 31st at the event hall on the 7th floor of Building A at Seibu Shibuya.
"Space Brothers" is a manga series by Chūya Koyama. It depicts the journey of two brothers, Mutta Nanba and Hibito Nanba, who vowed to become astronauts when they were children, as they pursue their respective dreams. The series began serialization in Kodansha's manga magazine "Morning" in 2007, and has sold over 35 million copies in total, including digital editions. In 2012, it was adapted into a live-action film starring Shun Oguri and Masaki Okada.
The exhibition was planned to commemorate the conclusion of the series, which ran for 18 years. The venue will showcase the story up to the final volume, volume 46, which depicts events such as the rescue mission on the moon and the Nanba brothers' return to Earth, along with original drawings, setting materials, and memorable scenes for each character.
The exhibition also features tools and handwritten notebooks that Koyama actually used. The exhibition is designed to allow visitors to experience the world of the work while looking back on the dreams and challenges that the Nanba brothers pursued, as well as the bonds they shared with family and friends.
"The end is the beginning."
The exhibition's key visual features Mutta and Hibito in spacesuits. The composition is the same as the cover of Volume 1, but Koyama has newly drawn the grown-up brothers.
The exhibition's theme is "The end is the beginning." Koyama says, "I paid homage to the iconic cover of the first volume of 'Space Brothers,' depicting the two characters, now grown up, in matching spacesuits, using the same composition. I've heard that a wonderful team has created this exhibition. Please enjoy it."
Seibu Shibuya Store opened in 1968 and will close its doors at the end of September this year, ending its 58-year history. By drawing a parallel between the conclusion of the manga series "Space Brothers" and the upcoming closure of Seibu Shibuya Store, the message is conveyed that neither "end" signifies a final conclusion, but rather a continuation into the future.
A large-scale visual, approximately 4.6 meters high and 6 meters wide, is on display in the show window on the first floor of Building A until August 23rd.

The hamburger restaurant "MARY BURGER" on the 8th floor of Building A will open a limited-time collaboration cafe to coincide with the exhibition.
The theme is "The Journey of Mutta and Hibito, who aspired to become astronauts." In addition to offering original menu items inspired by people and scenes related to their journeys, the cafe will be decorated with visuals from the series, creating a space where visitors can continue to enjoy the world of "Space Brothers" even after viewing the exhibition. Collaboration cafe exclusive merchandise will also be available for purchase.
A collaboration with "Wakasa Space Mackerel Can," a reproduction of a space food mackerel can recipe developed over 14 years by Obama Fisheries High School and Wakasa Prefectural High School in Fukui Prefecture, will also be featured. The "Space Brothers Exhibition Mackerel Can Set," which includes "Wakasa Space Mackerel Can" and "Seasonal Fresh Premium Mackerel" in an original package exclusive to the exhibition, will be sold in stores.
The collaboration cafe is open from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Each visit is limited to 75 minutes, with last orders taken at 9:00 PM. Advance reservations with special benefits for meals cost 800 yen. Walk-ins are accepted if there are available reservation slots.
The exhibition runs until August 23rd.
